Wow, that's really sad. You hate to hear guys ending up like that because of boxing.

"My uncle Roger Mayweather has lost a lot of memory from the sport of boxing...he's only in his 50's, but it seems like he's an old man in his 80's...boxing is wear and tear on the body...he don't even know who I am anymore...he's not doing well...he's not sharp as he used to be, and you must realize, me and my uncle Roger was fighting professional at the same time...it hurts"

I might be off on this but I've watched Floyd interviews lately, and the way he has to pause for 5 seconds to find the right word all the time, and the way he repeats himself, ect... was he always like that? Floyd seems punchy but I don't know if that's just the way he always was. I remember him being a bit sharper with his tongue.

That explains why he chose Berto. It all makes sense now.

A old pro boxer lived by me old Billy Morgan he was as you say punch drunk, a nice old guy
but he had taken to many punches to the head, I remember he used to breed boxer dogs
and Billy had hands on him like a shovel.

I'd say he's more measured partly because of mellowing out with age and life along with thinking before he speaks because of law suits, social media, the brand etc etc. A few years ago he tried to get to much out to fast all the time and sounded like an animated 12 year old. He sounds much more mature to me now but also reserved. I'll have to take a closer look/listen. He has not really been hit all that many times flush but who knows which punch does it and when? Sad about uncle Roger. He did take a fair bit of punishment. And Sr has had scrambled speech for ten years. Could be a genetic connection influencing it also.

Floyd had to give him a 1000 quid to go on stage

Jake Lamotta is 94. Mad world.

Was watching an interview Hagler - he's 61 - gave the other day. You would've never known he once got punched in the head for a living. Obviously getting punched in the head will leave damage but there must be other factors that contribute to the rapid decline in some of these fighters.

You're probably right. There are times he'll repeat the same start of a sentence like 4 or 5 times before he continues, but like you said that could just be him measuring himself and him not being a smart guy to begin with.

Strange how the brain works. You have guys like Lamotta and George Chuvalo who took so much punishment and remained coherent into old age. Chuvalo's nearly 80 and you'd never tell he took bombs from Foreman, Frazier, Ali, Patterson, Quarry, ect. Then you have the Quarry brothers who couldn't even dress themselves or remember their names in their late 40s.

Obviously there is a genetic component involved. It would be great if it could be identified and isolated so that those more prone to getting pugilistic dementia could be at least notified, or we could pinpoint an exact time when someone should hang up the gloves.

I wonder if we consider how thes guys sparred. I believe that some people are built to take more punishment and some guys have just had the luck of the draw but I always wondered about the effects of the wars the general public didn't see. I remember reading about how Donald Curry burnt out so fast because he sparred so many rounds and had too many gym wars on top of his pro fights. Just food for thought.

Curry was the most beautiful efficient fighter ever. The strain of making the weight reduced the length of his career at the top. At the end of his career he took too many punches, ones he would have avoided earlier.

Terry Noriss also had a short career.

Good point too. We only see the fights in the ring, we don't get to see the thousands of wars these guys have in the gym. All those sub concussive blows add up. From what I've read, it's the repeated blows rather than the one big KO punch that does the brain in.

Ray Robinson ended up with pugilistic dementia and he was never KO'd. He also fought until his mid 40s though.
