    Default new to boxing

    hey everybody,

ive been interested in boxing for about 6 months now and i just recently decided to do something about it. me and my friends would always light contact body box with each other just playing around so i decided to go out and buy 2 pairs of gloves just for some friendly body boxing and its been worth every dime so far. i have sucha blast with my friends doing this. we take precautions doing this and we are smart about it. no head shots because i dont have proper headgear or anything.

i found a local boxing gym about 20-30 min away which seems pretty good comparing to what other people on this site have to drive. i havnt checked it out yet but i think im going to go tomorrow. i just want to get a feel for what the gym is like and look at other people workin out there.

by the way im 15 (my birthday is tomorrow so im practically 16) ive had previous experience in martial arts (about 2 years) and i enjoyed that untill my teacher stopped teaching and i never bothered to find another. i dont know if boxing is for me though. i havnt ever been in a real fist fight, so i dont have a good idea of what getting punched in the head multiple times is like so i dont know if i can handle it like most of you guys. this is what discourages me.

k to the point, were you guys bervous when joining your gym? i am way nervous about everything. for example: what if i can meet up to my trainers needs? i dont want to be laughed at when i go the gym because i have no background in boxing and since im fairly old younger kids could be whooping up on me. im not sure if this is the sport for me but id love to try it. does anyone have any tips or encouragement? thank you

...oh and by the way im 6 feet 160 pounds and i work out regularly about 4 times a week.

congrats on quitting man, you made it over the first hump, hope you can go all the way. and, just make sure the trainer knows when he meets you that you want to compete (assuming you want to), because like others have said, trainers hate 'get fitters'. even if you don't plan on competing right away, you'll get more attention and feedback, and hey, you may find out that boxing is for you, then wanna compete. either way, you'll get more out of it. and don't worry about being nervous, everyone is nervous the first day. walking up to the trainer is hard, but just remember to PAY ATTENTION. you wanna make a good impression. if he sees that you're half interested, he's going to treat you accordingly. good luck

Don't worry so much my friend its supposed to be fun and its much easier if you aren't all tensed up! People in boxing gyms tend to have their own efforts to occupy them and to be willing to help out, rather than laugh at, a new guy. I'll warn you upfront that there will be some aspect of it at some point, that you will be sure you'll never get right; everybody has one of those problem areas, whether it comes in the first month of learning basics or two years fromnow. Getting hit....its not as bad as its built up to be. You get used to it.

im 21. i got into boxing a year ago and i realize i finally found the sport for me. i played football and b-ball all through high school but didn't really like them a whole lot. I wish i had gotten into boxing early like you. also most of the people who box, most not all, aren't the kind of people who think they're tough and start bar fights ans shit like that. they're good people and excited about new people getting into the sport. also, when you train, you aren't getting hit. only when you spar and compete so its not like they're a whole lot of pain involved in training. even when you do spar and compete you only have to move one or two inches to get hit in the cheek instead of the nose. in addition to boxing i do muay thai and brazilian jiu jitsu, basicaly mma. so, if you aren't sure if boxing is exactly your thing check out some mma.
