Pongsaklek to fight Myekeni

[BOXING] Thailand's dominant boxing champion Pongsaklek Wongjonkam's next fight will be against top South African challenger Monelisi Myekeni.

"Pongsaklek has not contested a mandatory defence for three years, and his next defence must be against Myekeni, who is ranked the No 1 contender," said World Boxing Council (WBC) President Dr Jose Sulaiman.

"I have the highest regard for Pongsaklek and he is truly a great champion, but his next defence must be against Myekeni."

There has been speculation that Pongsaklek is looking to Japan for his next defence but - with the WBC mandatory order - the Thai title holder is most likely to fight Myekeni in Thailand, even though the South African purse being offered would be a huge pay day.

Pongsaklek was inducted in the WBC Hall of Fame when he successfully defended his WBC world flyweight title for the 15th successive time with a TKO decision over Mexican Everardo Morales.

Although beaten comprehensively, Morales said he was not hurt by the punches of the Thai champion.

"I was cut by head butts, not by the punches," said Morales who received 24 stitches to his forehead and head.
