Would Urango be a good move for Ricky Hatton?

11.07.06 - By Jeff Allinson: After watching Ricky Hatton last time out, one thing, in my opinion was for sure: Hatton did not look anywhere near as comfortable at 147lbs as he did at 140lbs. His coverage of the ring was slower, his work rate was down, (which is Rickys biggest asset in my opinion) he did not take his power with him, and he admitted to being hurt by a fighter not really considered to be a big puncher (or anywhere near close) in the division..

Now I am a huge fan of Hatton, but I am also a realist. Unless Hatton gets an immediate shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr, a fighter I have always believed Hatton can beat, especially as he is not a natural Welterweight either, (assuming of course Hatton beats Oktay Urkal on 9/12/06, which he should), then I believe Hatton should move back down to more familliar territory at 140lbs and go straight for his old IBF title now held by the lumbering lug Juan Urango.

Now admittedly I have not seen too much of Urango, but my gosh he looks terrible. He has all the lateral movement of an Ocean Liner, has little in the way of defence (if you think Hatton has no defence check this guy out), he applies pressure, that is for sure, but he is predictable, slow and ripe for the picking. His resume is shaky to say the least, and how in the name of god he got the decision last time out over Ben Rabah, for the vacant IBF belt was just plain beyond belief. He was out worked, out slicked out thought and out boxed. Urango hardly landed a punch in anger all night (not one worth mentioning anyway) and I believe I gave him 2 rounds, one of those out of pity! I see nothing Juan brings to the table would cause any problems for Hatton at all.

Hatton would comfortably out point this guy (giving Juan a nice pay day in return), thus getting his old belt back and setting up a mega fight at 140lbs with Miguel Cotto, with both belts on the line. He will need to get a move on however as Cotto is desperately tight at the weight.

Ok you are asking, why not wait for Miguel to move up to 147lbs because it is going to happen? Well here's why. Hatton is a good bit smaller than Cotto, and I believe Miguel would carry the extra weight much better than Hatton. Ok so I feel Ricky would win either way, but why make things harder for yourself than they need be?

But firstly I think he needs to get his old belt back.....Juan Urango bring it on!!!

Ben Rabeh was seriously robbed against Urango.

I used to think that the Italians and the germand were the worst for robbing visiting fighters, but as the Us sees its influence and quotient of world champs and contenders decline (just as Italy and germany did), they are starting to act in the same way !!!

Comments / howls of outrage ?

(and yes, there have been some strange hometown decisions in the UK as well - that actually begins to provide examples to my theory)

One sentence--HATTON KO's URANGO before the 9th!!! You are right... he is much better at 140.

Simply put... Hatton returns to JuWelt, he will dominate EVERYONE there, including Cotto (side note--someone has to say something about the way Cotto low blows his way to victory whenever he is in trouble).

    M'Baye loses
    Corley loses
    Junior Witter--Ko'd
    Raul Balbi--great fight
Ben Rabah--same ugly fight as Urango, but Hatton finds him.
Arnaoutis--GREAT FIGHT, but may be too small for Hatton

Hatton will dominate everyone... until Jose Luis Castillo gets to JuWelt. Castillo will rule the division until he retires.

YES--he should definitely make that move.

Mayweather may already be past the point of needing Hatton. Ricky really damaged himself against Collazo.
