Default De La Hoya's Plans For Boxing

Oscar De La Hoya was interviewed on local radio here yestarday and announced some big big plans he has for boxing. He talked about Golden Boy Promotions a bit, saying that 4 years into it now he finally understands the business of boxing. He talked about how a lot of fighters are flocking to Golden Boy because of their retirement plan, as it provides financial security for fighters long after they retire. Then he was asked about Bob Arum and he was pretty candid, saying that Golden Boy Promotions isn't driven by greed and money like Top Rank. He said he has a lot dates lined up next year for Golden Boy fighters, spanning all the major networks. He commented a bit on Tyson and his current state, saying it was a sad story.

But then he announced his first step into forming a National Boxing commission, one like Howar Cossell called for 35 years ago. Whoa. He said right off, that his aim was to please fighters and fans, not the other people. He said that real soon he is going to go forward with a series of fighter summits. These fighter summits would call for EVERYONE in boxing to come, fighters, promoters, managers, trainers, judges ect and he would talk about a variety of things. He said it wouldn't be a GBP recruiting summit, he would just educate fighters on how much money they should be getting for each individual fight. If you fight on an ESPN undercard, you should get X amount of money. Stuff like that. But then he talked about fan's perception of boxing. He talked about the scorecard error in the first MAB - Rocky fight and how people thought that was crooked and didn't look right on Oscar's part. Oscar laughed but then he said it was serious because people have no idea what the deal is with judges, promoters, managers ect. First he said that he wants a strict outline on what exactly it takes to become a judge. Whether it's schooling or whatever. Then he wants to know what all the other promoters and managers are doing to protect their fighters. He talked about a lot of his fighters early in their careers were getting more then 75% of their paycheck taken away by managers, trainers and promoters and how it still goes on today.

Basically, he said that these summits would be the first step to REFORM boxing, and CLEANSE it. 2 words that imo aren't to be used lightly. Then he stated a timetable, he said that this is one of the most talented generations in boxxing history and it's a shame that they had to go so long with a dark cloud over boxing, he said he would like to open up a new world of boxing to these fans before the Mayweathers and Taylors of boxing retire.

To bad I couldn't find an audio of this on the KNBR site, it was an excellent interview. He also said that he wasn't scared to make most of the people in boxing mad, as long as the fighters and the fans don't get the short end of the stick.

A big CC 4 you amat.
I tried searching for the file and I could not find it either but thank you very much for trying to recapture what was said. I hope Oscar accomplishes what he is set out to do. Thanks to you I did find an old interview that I did enjoy:

Found here and that is where I was looking for the file you mentioned

Maybe they will post it in the next few days.

    Again thanks for the post.

CC for the post - interesting stuff. I think the ideas that are coming from ODLH are really good and are just the things boxing needs. Certainly makes really positive reading and if Golden Boy can do half of what he is trying to do then it is nothing but a good thing for boxing. Its stuff like this that could make boxing hit the headlines for all the right reasons and hopefully shake off the image boxing might have with some people. It will hopefully bring more people into the sport as well and with it a whole host of new talent. Its good to hear news like this as too often boxing is making the wrong noises. I love the sport, we all love the sport and so does ODLH...add this together and things can get even better.

So far Oscar has only signed prospects with talent, so I wouldn't count on it :P

Yeah, Oscar is a business man. Always has been and always will be.
Shrewd is the word? Countless times Oscar was in the driver seat to decide how much percentage his opponents deserve, heheh.

    amat.

Here's the thing...over the years...I've taken a lot of flack over my admiration of Oscar as a boxer & a promoter...but I think the man shines.

No shit. If he sticks to his guns...& I think he will because he's a boxer first...or was a boxer first...& I believe that he has the clout & the money to do great things for the sport.

I'm proud of the man. Whether you think he's a pretty bwoy or not people...he could be the saving force behind boxing.

Imagine Oscar getting GBP up & running full steam & showing up on Letterman & late night shows on a daily basis...our sport could be right back where everyone wants it...the fwockin map!

Me? I'm just Cool-N-The-Gang with where we are.

Respect Oscar. You are the man.

well oscar is rich and successful because he was in control of his career and he wants the same for other fighters and his opponents made their highest career paydays fighting him itz not like he hung them dry. hopkins got 11 million, Vargas got 8 million, trinidad made 13 million, mosley made 7 million. none of these fighters ever came close to making the same amount of money fighting other opponents.
"Very few people really understand what it means to be a fighter. I hate it when I hear someone say, 'That fighter doesn't have guts. I hate that, I don't care if you're a world champion six times over or a four-round fighter, to step inside that ring, you have to have guts" Oscar De La Hoya

While it was a great sucess and a fantastic card, the fact that it was on HBO Latino and they don't do those fights anymore...I'm not sure it's going to materialize.
