I think it is a smart move. It's hard to not take $2.5 million and sit on your ass, but Peter has a good chance in picking up a belt by fighting Maskaev. Once he gets this title he will have much more leverage in negoiating a fight with Klitschko. Very ballsy, but I think the right move.

wow Peter's got some Kahunas. Thats some serious brass balls to turn down all that dollar. I doubt his purse would top $2.5m to fight Maskaev. Good man Sam Peter.

Personally I think if Vitali was any kind of man he would allow Peter to have first shot knowing that he would be first in line to fight the winner.

The fact that he continues to insist on jumping the queue suggests two things:

    1) He knows Maskaev is a C lister and represents an easy chance to pick up a belt with little risk.

    2) He sure as hell doesn't want to fight Sam Peter.

This makes me think that even if he does get first shot and fights and wins against Maskaev, he will follow in the proud footsteps of Ricky Hatton and thanks the WBC for the opportunity and hand them the belt back.

Yeah, it's the right thing to do, but if it were me I would take the 2.5 million and retire. FREE MONEY!

II were an NFL player I'd play out my first contract and retire with a few million in the bank.

I disagree, Vitali earned his Emiritus status, it's his parogative to fight the chanp whenever he wants, Peter is entitled to his shot too, and he's gonna get it against Klitschko!

The offer included a $3 million payday for Peter to fight the winner so I dont think he was gonna hand the belt back.
It's part principle, but I also think in the long run if Peter believes in himslef he will make the bigger money down the road by taking this route.
Still, for a guy who has never seen close to 7 figures, it shows a lot of integrity.

So if Lennox comes back he can fight Maskaev before then? Because he retired first And therefore got a belt that ranks above Vitali's It's all bullshit.

Oh yeah Vitali can come back whenever he wants and automatically fight the WBC Champ/ If thats the case why would the WBC ENSURE Sam Peter a title shot in his next fight after the first James Toney fight? Then after the second. If it was really that dire on Vitali's return why didn't they put a clause in the WBC to ask the Emirtius champion if for that entire year he intends on returning? Why put promises in contracts if you're just going to betray them.

I'm with you man, Peter has earned his shot but rules are rules, WBC can do what they please, Peter is still entitled to his shot, but he's got to wait.

As much as like Vitali, you gotta respect what Peters doing here Vitali should realise he needs to just let it go and wait his turn.....
