Default How Does One Get Venerated, But The Other Gets Treated With Such Distain??

*****PLEASE LETS BE RESPECTFUL ON THIS THREAD, THIS ISIN'T THE US.FANS VS GREAT BRITAIN FANS, LETS DISCUSS INTELLIGENTLY*****

Over the past year I have been convinced that Calzaghe has more than the goods and has worldclass talent, but you cant make a living out of one fight and forge a legacy, I am disappointed that he is trying to pull the wool over our eyes with fighting Peter Manfredo Jr and lead us to believe this is a legitimate and credible fight, and this is the one and only golden opportunity for him to get the millions of dollars and recognition in the states, when this is just an easy way for him to get his 20 defenses

Now whats fair is fair... Floyd Mayweather Jr get lambasted by the majority around here for his level of competition throughout his career, well I got news for you Floyd has fought WAY BETTER AND CREDIBLE OPPOSITION than Joe Calzaghe!!!! But Joe is lauded as a national treasure and Floyd is a coward, slacker and a sackless disgrace...Could never figure that out...

I don't want to here that Floyd's a jerk and Joe's not, I have read some articles and quotes by Calzaghe and he has been quite mouthy over the past year himself.. This is about in ring accomplishments strictly...

I think I made a fair assessment on this and would love to here what everyone thinks, Why does Joe get Royal treatment and Floyd Gets The venemous treatment??

I think Jealousy is a large part...remember most people show distain for the pure boxers....they don't like all the movement and skill...Joe brawls abit...PBF cannot be goaded into trading punches...

I agree with you to an extent Rags, my point is lets talk about the level of competition and the exorbitant amount of scrutiny on one end, but glory beyond compare for the other

Joe got the royal treatment for a while I can agree to that. I don't think thats the case now though. Now its a case of as you were for any Calzaghe fans, back to fighting mediocrity with some strange angle attached by the management that only makes sense to them, therefor makes sense to Joe. With regards to anything Calzaghe has to say I genuinely believe the bloke hasn't got a clue what he should be doing or who he should be fighting.........seriously.

Mayweathers opposition and how he goes about dispatching them is scrutinised more thoroughly than anyone else's because he's the best, nothing wrong with that.

I dont know why we are comparing Calzaghe and Mayweather like this. As far as Im concerned both fighters have their share of critics especially so on this site.

Im a Calzaghe fan and hold my hands up that he has fought Mario Veit too many times as well as a bunch of other no namers. But then again, he has had decent fights too. He has skills and to be fair has tried to make big fights on occasion but they have fallen through because of Hopkins greed and because Calzaghe always busts his hand when making a fight with Glenn Johnson. More big fights should have been made by now though. He has the tools to beat the best.

As for Mayweather. Yes, he has beaten a lot of decent fighters. Fewer so in recent years. Gatti and Baldomir spring readily to mind. Yes, Hatton gets flack for fighting paper champs too these days! Like Calzaghe he has tremendous skills but seems to have skimmed through divisions recently without ever really leaving his impact. Im impressed he is fighting Oscar. But I do think Oscar is almost mummified and will get shown up somewhat.

Both are very skilled fighters, both could have done a bit more than they have in recent years, Calzaghe moreso...

CC, JT. I applaud your attempt to engage in an intelligent boxing discussion. Sometimes you have to put all these "disclaimers" up front.

On the subject, I don't consider myself a PBF fan, but I'm definitely NOT among those who question his level of opposition. Floyd has shown a willingness to fight those who will be willing to fight him. His fight against "Chico" Corrales has to be mentioned as a shining example.

About Calzaghe, I honestly don't know much about him. I know he fought and beat a highly-regarded and dangerous Jeff Lacy, but other than that.... I don't know. However, I do agree that many on the forum are pretty much ready to confer "super-human" status on him.

Pretty unevenly split, it would seem like.

As for PBF being a jerk....... I don't know. When I compare him to the likes of Judah and Toney, the guy doesn't seem all that much of a jerk in comparison.

I think a lot of Floyd's detractors hear the things Floyd says personally and get turned off by it. Calling himself the greatest fighter of all time. Better than Ali, better than Sugar Ray Robinson. Almost claiming he's immortal.
And when he says these kinds of things about himself, it just opens up all the floodgates to critique every decision he's ever made regarding his opponents.
Because in comparison to what he claims to be, of course there's no way anyone could live up to the hype that surrounds him and the hype that he creates even for himself.
People find it hard to appreciate things for what they are and only for what they are.
Floyd looks spectacular virtually every time he steps in the ring. But no matter who he beats and how good he beats them, Floyd's haters will always find some sort of ammunition against him. Because there's no way he (or any human) can live up to what he claims he is.

I would say Calzaghe gets just as much criticism as Mayweather on these boards.

Mayweather will always be criticised becuase he's the man at the top and so will always be under far greater scrutiny than any other fighter.

The only top fighters I can think of off hand who get almost no criticism at all are Barrera (never heard anyone say a bad word about him), Winky, and Pacquiao.

Everyone else gets stick all the time.

I think the answer is a simple one.

In the United States you can dislike Floyd Mayweather because you have Jermaine Taylor, Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones Jr, James Toney, Winky Wright, Shane Mosley, to be a fan off. If all our hopes rested on Mayweather we wouldn't say a bad word about him.

In the UK you either like Joe Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton or a one of several lesser known fighters.

To be fair, anyone who thinks Floyd is a "coward, slacker and a sackless disgrace" is a biased idiot and has absolutely 0 credibility. I do see your point though...

Bilbs The Calzaghe critisim has just started recently, I say that because if you dared to say 1 word against Calzaghe there would have been a rapid influx of sadclicks that would of knocked off the server for 2 weeks....

Well I compare because Joe is gonna be 36 next month and is almost done with his career and the book is pretty much been written for his career

Floyd is gonna be 30 in a few days and is hitting stride for his prime and has already done more and has fought the better competition..

I think it is futile to like a fighter just because of his nationality. Other aspects play their part for me. And that is why James Toney and Barrera have been such favourites of mine. I couldnt care less where they are born, that is irrelevant to me. Its got to be about the style or something about the fighter themselves.

That stands to reason though doesnt it? Theres a time and place for criticism, now is it, not fresh of the back of your biggest win to date against a guy that was sent over to tear you a new one
