    Default Need computer advice BADLY!!

    ok tech junkies

I want to buy a laptop computer. But it seesm that everywhere I go I different sales bullshit. We obviously have a computer where I do the bulk of my work, but I want/need mobility, but not so badly that I'm willing to drop over a grand. ok....

    WTF do I REALLY need?

I'm using it for school. I'm doing an mba and I want to get a notebook so I can do school work and research (internet) while I travel on weekends and/or vacation and/or so I can work outside in the summer on the patio or at starbucks or panera bread or wherever rather than be stuck inside on a beautiful day or night. Mind you, I'm really only doing word processing (essays) and Excel spreadsheet calcs for finance and business statistics courses.

Also, I need MS Office since all the electronic files I submit to profs need to be in either MS Word or Excel. So MS Works just don't cut it. I have a burned version of MS Office 2003... can I put it on a computer that has Windows Vista? I've been told I can't and I've been told I can. So WTF gives?

Please...talk to me like I know NOTHING... because honestly, when it comes to computers I know jack shit. I just use 'em as a means to an end.

Ccs for any helpp. Thanks guys. Von

Von, if you are just going to be using it for word processing, excel, etc. then you could definitely go for a laptop with a low price tag on it. If you were just to use these programs plus internet and nothing else you could go on 256mb memory. Though i think the minimum amount that most new laptops have now is 512 mb memory. The one Lords posted looks good and as far as I know you can't really get a new laptop for much less than $500-600. 60-80 gbs hard drive would be all you need if just saving documents, a few songs, etc. Make sure it has wi-fi, though that is standard on most now i think.

Keep in mind, even if you dont plan to you will probably end up using your laptop for more things than just internet and word, excel etc.

And by more things I am talking about a porn library. It may just start out as a porn folder. But it will grow. They always do.

not at all, was just saying I love my notebook and if you click the link and read the write up on it. It pretty much describes what Von said about being able to carry it around and all that.

My apologies if I came across as if my notebook was better then Lords, ask Lords he knows me better then that.

    Lords?

You are running risks if you use a burned copy of office 2003. The problem is that Microsoft is getting good at being nasty to people who have burned (illegitamate) copies of their key software. If you can afford it, get legit versions of Windows and Office. Most other stuff you can get free. Another option is to get old versions of the software, you don't need advanced copy of MS Word to write an essay. Wordpad will save in Word 6.0 format, and there is a good chance that the MS Works will save basic spreadsheets in Excel format.

    more ccs. thanks guys.

So, I was thinking that maybe I'll look for one with Windows XP on it. This way I can at least TRY to load my copy of Office on it. Then if that fails, buy the student version.

I've also heard that 512 mb RAM is fine for XP, but you run into problem with 512 if you're using Vista. True?

id say just make sure you got decent RAM (no less then 500MB) and a processor id say around at least 2.5GHZ, although many people say that shit doesnt really matter too much when u got good RAM

youll probably want a decent amount of memory too so get AT LEAST like an 80GB HDD but you would be better off with something more like 160GB - 250GB

you probably wanna make sure that shit has a wireless network card in that shit unless u wanna cop one for alot if money and install it yourslef
