Default What is Jermain Taylor's best asset?

Honestly the more I think about it, no one certain thing about Taylor really jumps out at me.

He's fast but he's not extraordinarily fast.

He looks like he'd be a big puncher but his power seems like a big question mark to me, how many people has he ever really knocked out? Daniel Edouard but who else, and I don't mean his first five or ten fights against absolute no hopers. Alex Bunema wasn't even a true knockout and it took awhile to even do that. Couldn't stop Joppy although to be fair Joppy didn't really want to fight. Now its no shame to not knockout Hopkins or Wright but he didn't seem to be able to even faze two small jr. middleweights in his last two times out, guys that have been badly hurt before.

He's by no means a crude brawler but he's not an extraordinarily skilled guy, he still makes a lot of mistakes and can be very very wild at times.

I think his stamina is still a question mark.

He hasn't really fought any huge punchers- in fact his management seems to have been clearly avoiding them although that could change if they take the Pavlik fight-so its hard to tell how good his chin is. Bernard's not Gerald McClellan but he can clearly punch with the right hand but he was so gunshy in those fights and even then he did hurt Taylor.

But even with all that said, even if you think he lost the Hopkins and Wright fights, and I clearly thought he lost the Wright one, you can't ignore the fact that he was very competitive with two great fighters. So obviously he's got things going for him. So what do people think his biggest strength is, his size, speed, skill, something else maybe?

taylors best asst has been luck imo..,

dont get me wrong the kid as fucking skills... yet he is to lazy to really put them into ture content!

he has a great jab,a good chin good footwork... but looking at his biggest win v hopkins, he 'beat' a guy who would only fight 1 min of a 3 minute round... taylor will notcomite him self... if he did he would of beaten winky without to much trouble.. te bullshit "i spent to much" in the ouma fight after 4 fucking rounds would not of happened and the spinks fight would of been easy for him...

make no istake taylor can box, but he needs to get his ass into gear and prove it

even still I'm not sure he's an incredibly skilled fighter, that right hand is telegraphed all to hell and I'm not totally sure he has a good chin, I think that's still debatable.

I guess it would be his jab like Ice Cold said but he hasn't really been using it. He's also extraordinary at getting Jim Lampley to say "big right hand from Taylor" even when it lands on the other guy's gloves or shoulder, or not at all.

i know im surin alot of words tat the forum **** out lol (mainly coz i been hitting the rum tonight ) im not syaing taylor has incredible skill but he has skills, you don't get a gold medal for being a less than skillfull fighter...

hopkins may not be a p4p big hitter, but he could bang and bang hard, in the end of both their fights he did take some big hits ut they never looked to hurt him
wakco and taeth are prolly th best two to prove me wrong and this as they know hopkins bette than me, but i think taylor has a very sturd chin imo

basically I agree, he seems to be pretty good at a lot of things to me. He's pretty skilled, he's fast, but I can't think of anything he's extraordinary at. He's not one of those guys that are just amazingly skilled, he's not in that highest level of speed guys, his power is questionable.

Hopkins can punch, he's not a huge puncher but he can punch. I don't think Taylor has a glass jaw by any means but I think its open to debate how good his chin is.

Throws punches that sting. Too lazy or stupid to adjust strategy during a match.

Aside from his jab, there's not a lot of things Taylor does that are extraordinary, but he does a lot of things very well (that sounded like something Teddy Atlas says a lot). He's a well rounded fighter that is good in all areas, not great, but he doesn't really do anything poorly either.
However, his best assest is being able to exude enough charm on the judges that they give him fights he didn't actually win (again, I think I might be parroting again, I think Wacko posted something similar in another thread).

Nothing really. He has no major flaws or skills.....he is very average all round but it seems to have worked for him.
