Calzaghe camp fires warning to Kessler

By Duncan Bech Special to PA SportsTicker

LONDON (Ticker) -- Mikkel Kessler was warned on Thursday he will meet a "special breed of fighter" in his super-middleweight unification showdown against Britain's Joe Calzaghe.

A deal was struck on Wednesday to stage the fight at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, on November 3.

The 35-year-old Calzaghe holds the WBO version of the title, with Kessler the WBC and WBA champion.

Enzo Calzaghe, Joe's trainer and father, has told the Danish star there will only be one outcome when the rivals clash in front of 60,000 fans.

"Joe Calzaghe is a special breed. He isn't a normal boxer - he's a special breed of fighter," Calzaghe Sr. said. "He deserves to be mentioned alongside all the great sportsmen. This is the level of talent we are talking about - someone who is a step up from very good.

"Joe is uniquely gifted and Kessler knows he is boxing someone special. There's no question Joe will win."

Kessler is unbeaten in 39 fights - 29 victories have come inside the distance - and at 28 he is in the prime of his career.

Calzaghe Sr. respects Kessler's credentials, but believes his son's stunning points victory over Jeff Lacy last year is evidence of how reputations can be ruined.

"Joe's been looking to fight Kessler for a long time. There were times when it was going to happen and times when it wasn't," Calzaghe Sr. said. "We've prayed for this confirmation and Joe knows he will boxing against someone at his own level.

"Kessler will be one of his biggest opponents. He's top of the tree, but Lacy was supposed to be the big thing and looked what happened there. I have nothing bad to say about Kessler. He's a two-time world champion and

He's fighting this fight because of people like me that were claiming that he was fighting sub-par
competition, whether or not this will be a walk-over doesn't matter to people like me.
Kessler is rated #1 on almost all reputable listings at 168 right behind Joe as the champ.

I give a ton of credit to the Calzaghe camp for letting this fight happen.

Actually Jrs own comments were a wee more politic

"This is the only fight I want because a victory over Kessler will mean the most to my career at this point," Calzaghe said. "It will mean more than the beating I gave Jeff Lacy and even more than my win over Chris Eubank, which began my world title reign 10 years ago. "

Its called, dont give them anything to hang up in the locker room, why give the guy added motivation?
As far as Ive seen Kessler isnt saying anything
Dont care who wins, just get em in the damned ring allready
