Default Amir Khan - just some thoughts...

Yesterday I said that I doubted Warren would put Khan anywhere near Yuri Romanov. I've been fairly critical of Khan because I felt he was overrated but they've done quite well with him and tonight against Kristjansen he looked very good. His hands are really quick and his workrate and accumulation of punches can cause anyone real difficulty to deal with. I now think a fight with Romanov would be a good match.

I'm worried though that he will become a victim of British over-enthusiasm. It happens in other sports when the media bandwagon gets behind England saying they can win the world cup, or with Tim Henman and Andy Murray and the pressure to win Wimbledon, Lewis Hamilton with the Formula One last season have all been over-hyped and set up to fail and be criticised by the media when they fail to meet expectation. I feel we need to gain some perspective and give him time to develop and fulfill his potential. All people seem to care about is "when is he going to win the world title so we can regain national pride". It's ridiculous to put the pressure on his shoulders and we should be getting behind him rather than pushing him before he is ready. I guarantee if he fails they will jump on him and ruin his confidence.

he is somewhat overrated a tad bit, he's got a dodgy chin and still gets hit with right hands to easy, hence why they always get him in there with a non-puncher, at world level right now he'd get ko'd i feel. he has to be tested, against a top level fighter he'd get taken into water he hasn't swam in, his last 3 fights have been against smaller men, graham ans st clair where much smaller.

but he does have talent, fast hands and movement with some bang in his punches............ but not as good as he likes to tell us yet

Decent assessment. He needs the test, but Warren is worried about the lining of his pockets. He did well tonight against a world rated fighter (although we know the WBO was rating the guy too highly). I think he could hurt David Diaz yeno. Tis a shame he's tied up.

I think somebody like Nate Campbell will be too rugged for him. Amir Khan likes to wait, keep his distance and take his time. Nate will pressure him, get in close and test him mentally as well as physically.
He'd have a good boxing match with Casamayor and I think that fight would suit him better because of his youth and fast hands. Casamayor is tricky as hell though and a good boxer so I wouldn't be surprised if that went either way.
Havn't seen enough of David Diaz to predict how that would go.

Altogether a good performance by Khan, bit immature still in the way that he went straight for the kill and realised by the 4th round that Martin wasn't going anywhere. He found his range quite well and he is huge at that weight as well as rangey. He still needs to work on defence amongst other things..he still does that silly jab/hook type punch that he's done throughout his career where he lunges forward with a long jab but curves it into a hook at the end. Very ineffective and easily countered. He can get caught with straight right's through that punch all day long. I actually agree with with Warren (Eurgh!) in that he should have one more fight before his title shot. Iron out the little niggles in his game that he still has.

Romanov may be the perfect opponent to test Khans ability. It's a very stiff step up but if Khan is able to compete with Romanov he can be competitive against the top guys IMO

Yes i agree Romanov is a good fight for Amir , i dont think Warren will make the bout , but it would tell us a bit more about Khan.

He's a very good fighter but 2 things:I want to see him in with a power puncher because I'm not sold on his chin and I don't think his power is world class level,in which case he might struggle. Otherwise, pretty good fighter. Very fast hands and nice jab too.

Pretty much what I feel. He has some very good attributes, especially the speed, but hasn't been fighting often enough to really be able to make the most of it, and refine his style so that his deficiencies doesn't get frequently exposed. He doesn't have world class one punch power yet often he stays in range and plants his feet leaving himself exposed.

Romanov should be the absolute minimum opponent he faces before going for a world title, even then I feel he'll have been rushed. The tough Campbell and Casa might lose a few early rounds agaist him, but they'd eventually catch up with him.

I thought he did well last night and I look forward to his next one. I think It should be against Romanov but who am i to decide the fight. He needs to keep busy and it wont be too long till hes put up against the best. How would you fancie him against Casamayor?

Notice Warren wanted to wait a bit longer to fight for the world title. It is too early for him and I do not think they will put him in with Romanov unless they are forced too. Big dangerous punchers need not apply.
