sOME guys are just naturally in shape, they don't have to work as hard cause its like being naturally athletic. Some guys are above average level wise and some are below.
I've often thought about that myself, he fought into his mid 30's without an ounce of fat on him, drank like a fish, smoked like a chimney and F**ked anything that moved. There should be a movie made about Monzon, what a story!
Im going with the other two awnsers, some guys are just freaks
According to tests that were done to him in 1973 it was said that there was nothing special about his body and or his internal body system.
He said in an interview in 1972 that for one of his fights (he didn't mention which one) he had gone out the night before with a girl.
Speculations later were said to be the second fight with Nino which was known that he had started a relationship with a model from Monaco.
Who remembers Mayorga smoking a cigarrette after beating Forrest?
On that same night in the post fight interview he revealed that he had also smoked a couple of cigarettes on the limo ride to the fight.
Unfucken-Believeable![]()
If he smoked like a pack a day then yeah thats f'n nuts but if he's just smoking here and there when he's out partying its not that big a deal. Same thing with the drinking.
That is pretty unbelievable i have been watching quite a few Monzon fights lately, he is slow hand speed wise. But he is an accurate, deadly puncher, i just see him take care of Jose Angel Napoles who didn't belong in that weight class and it looked like a man vs boy size wise Monzon just toyed with Napoles. I have seen quite a lot of Monzon's most famous fights but i would love to see his 2nd fight with Bennie Briscoe, where i heard he was almost stopped in the 9th round, i believe Monzon really respected Briscoe and considered him one of the toughest opponents he ever faced.

He sure is an interesting character, were there ever any decetn books written about him?
He obviously put his hours in, in the gym aswell.
So long as he aint drunk or stoned in the ring, if he's put his gym hours in he would always be fine.
That's what it comes down too. He may have made things more difficult for himself but he got himself in the shape he needed to be.
