When you register to vote they use that listing to choose people for the jury pool in either state or federal courts. Supposedly you are only called about once every 10 yrs. Is this what you are talking about?

When you're on a jury, you're part of the people who make a decision on whether someone who is being charged for a crime is guilty or not.

Civil Lawsuits as well. Juries largely control the outcome of a case, as well as punishment or recovery. It is a cool job but you don't get paid anything and you are forced to do it.

I hear if you have a job they'll pay you whatever your income was for all the days that you miss. And don't they provide lunch as well?

They have changed it. You're now chosen by driver's license. Your name is put in to a pool for three years.
