    Default Wal-Mart $19.99 boxing gloves?

They have some vinyl boxing gloves at Wal-Mart for $19.99 so I got some. I was hoping they would work for sparring with my nephews.

They are 14 oz gloves and they looked like the kind you could box with (to my untrained eye). However, once I got them out and put them on, I was dissapointed.

They have no laces or velcro, just elastic. You just pull them on tight. I got the biggest size they had, the adult size or whatever, but the elastic on the wrist / forearm area is so tight on my forearms it hurts. I kinda have big forearms, I'm proud of them lol, but they make these gloves fit tightly to where it's uncomfortable.

Also the ends where my finger tips go have a seam that rubs my fingertips and hurts.

So, is it just me or are these gloves junky? Are they good enough to spar with?

I was looking at other cheap options since I don't have a lot of money, and I found these

    http://store.titleboxing.com/hookclastrai.html

These look better to me than the wal-mart ones, are these OK for sparring? At least they are leather and are adjustable for tightness.

If these are still not good enough, what are the most affordable gloves that are any good?

At least I can use the wal-mart gloves for a Halloween costume or something lol... Strong Bad or something... now I just need a Mexican wrestling mask...

well i use the more expensive gloves but i can still tell which gloves for a lower price are actually going to work.

I would go with these from titleboxing

now considering you might want to have the same pair to fight and spare with these would be good if you buy the 10 oz. if you have headgear and foul protector there wont be any problem with fighting with these, but make sure you know what your doing before going at full contact.

What makes one pair of gloves better than another?

Sorry if these are noob questions but I haven't seen any guides to buying gloves.

Also I don't think I understand the different glove weights. Are heavier gloves more padded, thus safer for beginners?

Yeah the heavier gloves are padded more and are designed for sparring and to prevent serious injury. Its probably best to get 14oz gloves if your a beginner.

I think the pros use 8oz gloves upto a certain weight (Welterweight I think ) and then the heavier weights use 10oz gloves. Not positive though. I'm sure someone else can confirm this.

well if you are just beginning then I wouldnt recommend you spar, especially against another beginner(sounds odd, but you need to be taught what to do and if your sparring with someone else who isnt that smart then your just wasting time). If you spar with someone good have them take it easy on you.

Craig was right on whatsize fighters use what size gloves although in can be stipulated in a contract for someone under welter to use 10 oz and someone over welter to use 8 oz.

the more padding is better for sparring, but if you buy certain gloves with more padding it doesnt mean they will work as good as others. Look at the shape of the glove and what the padding is made of. thats how you can tell if its a good glove. I wouldnt use the ones you asked about. The gloves i shown are also available in sparring sizes, but I thought since you were on a budget you could use them to fight too. also just because a glove has more padding doesnt mean that it is more protective. the glove needs to fit you hand like a glove.these also are good: http://www.ringside.com/store/produc...2&pagenumber=3

just look around and pick the ones you want, but consider what i said above about the shape and padding.

OK well I went ahead and ordered them

Might as well spend some money to have something nicer... I don't want to wear gloves that feel like I'm wearing pillows on my hands. Hopefully these will fit nicer to my hand.

The $19.99 Wal-mart ones didn't fit well, there was a seam rubbing on my fingertips that was annoying, the lining kept bunching up, and my hands sweat a TON in them. Also since they were elastic with no means of tightening them in certain areas, the very back of the glove was too tight on my forearm muscles while the wrist area was loose. They would shift around on my hand too. They also just kinda looked like cartoon gloves

Now, should I hit the heavy bag with these on or only use them for sparring or focus pads? I have some bag gloves already but they are very light, is it better if I hit the bag with these gloves for a better workout, since they weigh more?

Also will it ruin them hitting the bag with them, wear them out fast or something? They are leather and my heavy bag is vinyl.

But there might be an exception to that... The $19.99 elastic-only, non-adjustable cartoony Wal-Mart gloves were also Everlast

My friend was arguing with me earlier, he said hey, they can't be too bad, even if they were only $20, they are EVERLAST! That is a good brand, they must be good. I dunno, they seem crappy to me... Plus I noticed NO boxing store sells them, only Wal-Mart...

you got my point I was going to make.

they sell these things at walmart because people see the name and think they must be good because there everlast. also dont blame everlast for taking advantage, i didnt make the point because I thought you might be too poor to afford anything else.

Well let's just say the $69 gloves just mean more credit card debt for me LOL... I'm sure a lot of us aren't exactly rich here but I can afford this if I really want it, I'll just have to be frugal in some other areas to make up for it.

I was lucky, I called titleboxing (where I ordered those other $39 gloves) and was able to cancel that order and change it so I got the $69 Everlast gloves instead. I'm glad I did, I like the shape of the Everlast gloves better. I'm afraid I would have gotten the Title ones and not been satisfied with them either, just like I wasn't satisfied with the $19 ones. Oh well, sometimes it's true that if you buy cheap, you buy twice...

By the way, I saw some Grant gloves I totally fell in love with but they were like $114, there's no way I can afford that

I love glove's cut and the brown color LOL... However, I have to be careful that I don't get obsessed more with the EQUIPMENT than with the actual SPORT... I'm just a friggin beginner after all but I have done that before, gotten more enjoyment from buying nice equipment than from the actual sport LOL... I'm that way with my tools and with my paintball equipment, computer equipment, electronics stuff, etc... The stuff is just as fun as the actual hobby for me hehe

I wasnt making fun of you for being poor or anything, I mean I completely understand things like that, I also understand some people are sensetive about it and thats why I didnt type it until I did.

what all do you plan on using the gloves for? what i mean is sparring, bag work, etc.?
