Thread: Should winner celebrate while opponenent is out KO'd?

I watched Pac Hatton on HBO etc and thought nothing of how it ended etc.... But a couple of weeks later I watched the Setanta coverage I think, and after Hatton went down and the ref called an end to the fight, Manny obviously throws his hands up and goes and stands on the ropes in the corner etc...

But the comentators are looking at Hatton and going.. "oh my god this is bad (fair enough... BUT, then they say...) Pac should not be celebrating right now.."

What's your opinion... I just thought it was a typical response of the UK commentary when their guy went down, and I am positive if Hatton KO'd Pac in the same manner, the commentators would have been celebrating furiously as well and not said that Hatton should be celebrating on account of Pac still on the canvas....


I don't want this to be a Pac or Hatton issue, just a general discussion....

I do like the respect of people like Shane Mosley who have on more than one occassion celebrated, but then gone to pat the other guy on the head and see if they are okay while they are still laying there on the ground.... I wouldn't suggest every fighter to do this as it's good to kind of have no love lost between fighters..
And Pac is one of the most respectful fighters there are as well.. The fact he didn't go check on Hatton takes nothing away...

But I don't think their should be call for a fighter to not celebrate because he just scored a brutal KO in one of the biggest fights of their career....

If their was real genuine concern after a few minutes with stretcher and neck brace and shit coming out, then it would be fair to stop celebrating... But otherwise it's a bit precious of a comment by the commentators on that broadcast..

You can't really control the actions of a boxer after knocking out his opponent cold... They go into a fight with the objective of winning and once they attained that, their very first reaction is to celebrate... Tho if the opponent was badly hurt, there were boxers who showed real concern over their fallen opponent...

I observed PAC taking a concern look on the flatten Hatton when he was told by the referee to go to the neutral corner... PAC did console Hatton when Hatton was already on his stool...




When PAC flatten David Diaz, he tried to help Diaz stand up which I think is not the right thing to do... There are medical personnel around the ring that will be tasked to do these things...

I remember Benn taking alot of flack,in the immediate aftermath he jumped on the ropes in celebration,and then you could as it all started to sink in as McClellan lay there.Benn talking to commentators.Sort of a cruel irony and rollercoaster of instant emotions,not knowing in some cases exactly what the toll is.

One that has always stuck for some reason was a Teddy Reid fight with Amirilano (sp?) Valdez some time ago.Reid strikes me as a headcase,but he was a classless and crass fool,was clubbing Valdez,think he had a late shot mixed in.Guy went down in a bad way,obviously in distress,Reid strutting around,acting the f!!!!g jerk.Pretty sure he lapsed into a coma that night.

Remember Tyson doing the whole "Let me help you up" thing lol.Quite often.Knock your head off...and then goes running after it for the poor guy sprawled on the deck.

was just typing the exact same thing about Benn when my PC crashed, good call on that one. Same with Tyson, always thought that was funny too.Frank Bruno was like that too.Could probably count on one hand the number of real shits that would do it deliberately, usually big grudge matches or re matches. For the most point IMO it's all heat of the moment and what happens ten minutes after or at the presse conference counts more.I think you are entitled after sweating your balls off for months and then landing a KO to celebrate.

Thats it,the heat of the moment.Also in the manner you know?Like when a guy is clearly in command but its an accumulation leading to KO or a sudden shot out of know where.Its that natural instinct of realizing victory.You can also see the fighters that have beaten on a guy...but they just wont fall and they start asking the ref,motioning because they are weary of hurting someone.Sad all around really.Always talk on that Antonio Tarver/Harding rematch......I literally thought Tarver was going to rough that ref up after the fight,he was yelling in his face "What the hell is wrong with you".Ref was not fit to be in their.Harding took a horrific beating,but just wouldn't quit.

I remember a black female boxer knocking out an opponent and dancing about like a complete fucktard, I just cringed watching her, I'm sure many of you know who I'm talking about I did a quick google but found no name or video.

That was Jim Watt from the Sky commentary team. I can confidently say he would have said the same thing had the roles been reversed. I can recall him making similar comments many times over the years.

Agree mate, Jim Watt would say that regardless of who it was , so his comments wouldn't have been biased, I think he has been more like that since the Benn fight when he ironically was the one excusing Benn by saying he was unaware of what was happening to McClellan.

I think it's too big of an adrenalin rush to simply stop to celebrate for a second. If you're at a football (soccer) match and your team scores a goal, no one in the crowd bothers to check if the goal has been allowed, they just go crazy, it's natural human instinct.

Saying that, pac man did initally go to offer Hatton help or even see if he was ok, but Kenny pushed him out of the way and sent him back to his corner if I remember rightly.

I agree with this.

I Don't hold anything against Manny for celebrating but still think he should have cooled it a bit.

I seem to vaguely recall seeing Roach in an aftermath interview and he said one think that the cameras didn't. And that is that Pacquiao when to the hospital to check on Hatton before he did anything else, it could have been De La Hoya. I didn't read or hear that anywhere else. He was making a comment on the man and not the fighter.

I would celebrate.....I'd go over to my opponent and do this while he was sleeping
