Thread: Holding and Hitting: is it EVER enforced??

This foul has GOT to be the most frequent and least punished of all time. How many times did Lennox Lewis have somebody in a headlock with his left arm and throw an uppercut with the right hand? He even knocked out Grant like that. Plenty of others have done the same or worse. How is it legal?

Frank Bruno was one of the worst for holding and clubbing the opponant on the back of the head.

definitely, DLA. When I saw Bruno fight against Oliver McCall, I wanted to name Frank "The Iron Vice Grip" for all that holding & hitting.

Yep it was pretty blatent in the Michal Grant fight. Definte bullshit move.

Ali was terrible about it as well. That and pulling guys heads down and riding them.

I don't know, I guess I've just grown to accept it as have others and it's pretty hard to enforce that. I don't mind it if guys' have an arm free. I would much rather have someone at least make efforts when tied up on the inside like Ward and Hopkins do rather then have someone just tie up until the referee intervenes like Wlad.

“Punch and get out” How often do you hear that term anymore? Holding and hitting has always been a part of boxing. It’s an action that was never lost since the advent of the Queensberry rules. I don’t like it but I also don’t like seeing the ref separate fighters the moment they get close. It’s a fine line. Look at Joe Cortez. If he’s doing under card fights, you never see him but if he’s doing the main event, you can’t get him off camera.
He thinks he’s the star of the show and acts like a camera whore and interfering when he should not be.

As a gentleman already pointed out Ali made a living off such a practice along with holding behind the head. There were fights when he was warned about 10 times for doing it but never lost a point in any fight. Look at Wlad pre Steward. He never knew how to clinch and he paid the price for not knowing. Holding or clinching for better or worse is a tool of the trade

Some fighters don't know how or just don't like to do it...clinching saved Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s ass vs Mosley

there's only one RICKY HATTON...

Some fighters have made a name for themselves for holding like John Ruiz and I spose Hatton as he got near the end of his career. I think a referee has to let it go on a certain degree for infighting, the worst case is Cortez in the Mayweather/Hatton fight as soon as they came close to any in fighting Cortez jumped in and split them up and it made for me a horrible fight to watch.
Cotto is a fighter I wish would learn to clinch and hold a bit because he never does it, against Margarito it could have helped him.

Good call on the Mayweather clinch when Mosley landed the right hand as much as it pained me to see it it was a piece of defensive genious on Floyds part.
