Thread: Would Calzaghe ever come out of retirement?

With the 168 weight class looking so strong and with their being so many potential strong match ups, would Calzaghe ever be tempted to come back? If Froch keeps on winning and beats ward and could avenge his loss Kessler, imagine how massive a froch-Calzaghe match up would be! If either froch, Bute, Kessler or ward proves themselves as the best would Calzaghe coming back and fighting the proven best at 168 ever happen? I know Calzaghe has had personal problems but could we ever see him come back to make such a massive potential showdown?

Would love to see him come back and get humbled.

Calzaghe couldn't make 168 at the end of his career, so I doubt he comes back at that weight. He could feasibly make 175, but he'd need some warm-ups. I think there would be a lot of money on the table should Froch win the Super Six, but Ward brings money in Oakland & there's decent fights for him in Bute & the winner of Dawson/Hopkins. I don't see Calzaghe coming back, he's rejected over $10m apparently to come back & fight B-Hop, so it would have to be real big.

I don't think he does. It's been about 2 1/2 years since his last fight, and he's close to 40 years old. But as with any boxer i guess you never really know.

Money, fame, good looking chick and all the blow he can snort?

What does he need to get hit in the head for?

Because in my opinion he still has more to prove. If froch can beat ward and fight Kessler again and how much better is Calzaghes resume than frochs potentiall one? I think froch has more big name wins on his record if he can beat ward and Kessler. I read before froch is maybe looking for a fight with b hop and if he can beat him I think Calzaghe should fight froch. Would definatley be one of the biggest uk show downs of all time.

I always said that Joe would come back because he is such a boxing cliche, I figured he figured it was the done thing. Now Im not so sure.

If Froch manages to squeek past Ward I'll change my mind.

careful there buddy, you might hurt yourself from stretching too far

IMO Froch loses to Ward, and even worse so to B-Hop especially at light heavy, the jab gives Froch problems (as seen against Taylor, Dirrell, and Johnson), and he's always open to right hands and that's usually B-Hop's bread and butter, double jab over hand right or slip your shot and a lead right hand, IMO Froch takes on Kessler or Bute after the tourney

but i do agree with you that he's up there in resume with Calzaghe already, but hey Calzaghe's record is full of big names past their prime while Froch has guys that were mostly still competitive

I think he's too old to come back. And after years out his first fight back wouldn't be someone as good as froch.

If froch does win the super six and starts to look like king of the castle then that really will niggle joe.

No, he won't come back and I don't think Froch's success bothers him in the slightest. He thinks he got out at the top and has that 0, that's all that matters to him. He wouldn't risk it.

He beat a relatively prime Hopkins better than anyone else has done, beat up the American critics darling Lacy quite easily, beat a prime undefeated Euro titlist in Kessler handily and also in his youth boxed the pants off the ancient (31 ancient...hahaha) Eubank. His style was extraordinary and he beat a number of other very decent opponents. In his own way he was great, nobody was ever able to work him out.

He had a great career and is one of boxings best ever fighters, at least IMO.

I cannot see him making a comeback regardless what happens in the SMW or LHW division, as it's been mentioned, he's done everything that he needs to do in the sport, he has his health, his wealth and plenty of biff !

The Hopkins fight was VERY close. It could've gone against Joe to be honest.

As for Lacy, yeah he was the American darling, but really who had he beaten?

Kessler was a great win, can't deny that.

If Froch wins the Super Six (even if he doesn't) and then goes on to win titles at light heavy, which I am sure he will) he will undoubtedly have rustled up a better CV than Joe. Don't get me wrong, I am a Joe Calzaghe fan but I can acknowledge he was fed a lot of shit for much of the ten year reign he has and, with regards to that, didn't unify for years either.
