Thumbs down Miguel Cotto has split with Emmanuel Steward

Cotto has split with Steward and replaced him with Pedro Luis Díaz Benítez.

This news just confirms what I think is gonna happen, that Cotto is gonna get another beating. Splitting from Steward with the fight set to happen in two months is suicide, which hurts me to say as Miguel is my favourite fighter. Can't see anything past a Margarito late stoppage.

    RIP Cotto.

This seems to be a ridiculous decision to make

Has something happended for them to fall out, or is it a case he feels Manny cannot further him to beat Margo.

I feel Cotto plateaued some years ago, before the 1st meeting of these two. If anything he's only got worse. Was looking forward to this scrap, but think it's gonna be a beat down which could damage Cotto longterm

    My money is on cotto

I think it will be a UD

The mistakes he made in the first fight were so clear, i would be highly suprised if he makes the same mistakes again

the first fight was superb, i dont think this one will be any where near as good, a lot more holding

Well we dont know the ins and outs. It could just be coincidence that Cotto AND Dawson dropped Steward in consecutive months but it could also be that Steward isnt on the ball in some way and they are infact making the right decision in canning him.

Question: are we talking about the Pedro Diaz who's also working with GYMboxing from Montreal and the guy who used to train the majestic cuban boxing team? I am very surprised he did split from Mannie (same as for Dawson, 2 top boxers in a short period of time, it's curious) but Diaz is not like a kind of last comer in the business, the guy's a top gun, we just didn't hear much about him because he used to be behind the cuban legion when they were more or less at their peak. I don't think that Diaz is a very bad replacement, TBH (assuming it is the same Diaz as the one I have in mind), perhaps not a very good idea but at least, the guy replacing Manny ain't a new comer like when he did hire his nutritionist.

It is a bit curious that dawson and cotto drop steward in a short period of time, but also might be down to them, not so much cotto but doesn't dawson change trainers quite frequently. I mean going thru trainers like spare change isn't a good idea, but then you got fighters that are loyal to a fault, like pavlik should have dropped jack loew a while back...

DAMNITDAMNITDAMNITDAMNITDAMNIT!!!!!!! WTF are you thinking, Cotto?!? Hell... I'm not saying Emanuel Stewart is the answer to all Cotto's problems, but.... like others have said... SO CLOSE to the fight and he makes this major switch. Honestly, I think he needs some major counseling.

Emanuel may not be the world's best trainer, but he's pretty damn good... and he's CERTAINLY better than Joe WTF Santiago (Cotto's previous trainer).

Damn I hope this doesn't come back to bite Cotto on the ass. I'm already starting to cringe about Dec 3.

I don't think splitting with Steward will have any impact on the outcome of Cotto's rematch with Margo. I believe Miguel takes care of business and either stops Margo, or wins a clearcut decision.

Diaz is an intriguing choice though; master of the physical conditionning, mastermind behind the success of the cuban powerhouse including the legendary Felix Savon. Seriously, the more I think about it, the more I think that Diaz can work well for Cotto, perhaps his approach will be more suited than the Kronk Style and sure, Diaz has seen a lot before. Manny is Manny, a legend but Diaz is quite a master. The only thing that worries me is the switch so fast but hey, what do I know about Cotto's adaptability.

Honestly, I think its bit late or close to a fight for him to switch trainers. Last time he did this, he lost to pacman. There is not enough time for he and his new trainer to blend and develop this mutual relationship. I think Stewart gave him discipline that he never had when he was trained by his father and friend. He is training yes, but he still calls the shots, so its like he's training himself.
