Default The wierd phenomenon that is fan vitriol

We see it every weekend, a controversial incident, a close decision that could go either way, a fighter loses, a fighter wins. Immediately following, the threads begin, posters taking sides, spitting venom, gleefully delighting in one fighters loss or misfortune, extravagent claims being made.

This week it's the Hopkins shoulder affiar, a couple weeks ago it was the Ortiz Mayweather fight.

The comments afterwards are often amusing, usually spiteful, and nearly always ridiculous and over the top.

So, for eample, Victor Ortiz wasn't just KO'd in a perfectly legal and justified way, but he himself was to blame for the knockout, not just for being clueless and naieve on the night, but it was karma you see. Yes, he deserved to lose in that manner for the classnesses he had displayed in a previous fight. It was a case of his sins catching up with him. Apparently losing that fight early in his career by DQ, despite completely dominating from the opening bell wasn't enough, he had to be brought to justice in front of the watching world, and that great paragon of virtue, Floyd Mayweather, was the man to finally execute the righteous judgement and restore the good/evil balance in the world.

Now it's Hopkins. Being picked up and thrown to the canvas, injuring his shoulder and then losing by TKO wasn't just right, again it was vindication, the right moral judgement on a man who once made the most of a low blow against Joe Calzaghe several years ago. He deserved this. He clearly faked the injury to get out of a fight he knew he was going to lose and thus deserves to lose his title.

Ok, so he picked himself up off the canvas twice against Jean Pascal and showed great spirit to win all the remaining rounds and school his much younger, fitter opponent but here he must have been looking to quit, as Dawson was putting the heat on him...

Always such anger on the boards on a Sunday...

I think it is that these days people spend a lot of money watching boxing. They stay up late and really make a night of it. I know I look foward to big events that come up and big them up in my head expecting something spectacular. When they end in an unjust way after all that hype and expectation I must admit I get infuriated and say things I shouldnt.
I was angry with Mayweather, Ortiz and Cortez in that fight. I expected a bit more respect and professionalism from all three. As far as the B Hop vs Dawson fight goes. You can nunderstand peoples frustration. A strange ending where you could say it looked like B Hop was faking. You could also say that Dawson done that on purpose. Depending on your favourite you choose the outcome you want to believe before descovering the facts.
I must admit when I first saw the push I thought B Hop was faking it, but the results came out today which prove otherwise. Either way I believe the fight should have been called a no contest on the night. But that is just my small opinion in the ocean of other views.
