    Default NatGeo: American Outliers

So I was channel surfing last night and stumbled across 'American Gypsies' on NatGeo and after watching that for a while they had 'American Colony: Meet the Hutterites' which is about these quasi-Amish people that live in Montana. And to add to those shows they also have 'Doomsday Preppers' and 'Taboo' which are also interesting.

I love the melting pot which is America and I find these groups fascinating, I could not stop watching those shows. I don't think I have much in common with the Gypsies or Hutterites but still, their ways of life are interesting and both groups are very quick to shun their own people and are extremely worried over the "outside world"....perhaps a bit like the Mountain folk in North Carolina.

Anyone know of any other crazy little ethnic/religious groups found in the US (or England or Australia to include everyone)?

I am sort familiar with the Hutterites, or with their produce, at least. Every saturday there is a farmer's Market in Uptown Butte, and the majority of the booths are hutterites hawking some really quality produce. My friend is a truck driver and he regularly hauls their produce, and he says that they have the cleanest operations, are always ready and on-time. A pleasure to deal with.

Thy have crazy accents too. In North Carolina we have a similar group, the Mennonites. They have similar dress & so on. I always saw them at Wal-Mart.

The Gypsies I have had no interactions with...the closest I've gotten is Italians from New Jersey hahaha

When I was maybe two years old my mother and i were at the park, and this group of people were there, having a picnic, kicking a ball around, and drinking. There must have been 50 of them, and they ended up in a huge fight, jumping on our car and all. Why my mother didn't drive away until after the police came and all, I don't know. Anyway, she always said they were Gypsies.

This is a true story, back in the early 80's a good friend of mine had a pub, round the corner from the pub
was a small industrial estate. Some gypsies moved on there with there caravan's, any how they came to
the pub taking the pub over about 25 to 30. Ken my mate he was happy as a pig in shit, they were spending money like water. Myself and a good few mate's played, for his pub's pool team his pride and joy was a brand new pool table. We all told Ken these lot are fucking lunatics after beer.
Of course our advice fell on deaf ear's, myself and mates walking up the road to his pub as we got to the
door Ken's brand new pool table, came straight throw the window into the middle of the road.
The place was smashed to bit's, I remember looking throw were the window had been, and this woman with a baby in here arm's, was smacking a other woman in the face.
There was blood snot, broken glass tables, and chair's and body's all over the place, any how the police
station is about 300yards down the road it took there 45 minutes to get there.
They had all fucked off before the cops got there, before going the put £300 on the bar for the damage.
Ken's pub cost him £2000 to repair, and his new pool table missing a leg and on bricks, after all them years remember them gypsies Ken he still mad, well you live and learn don't you.

...American gypsies heh, strange, never heard of 'em but sounds like an interesting group. The only ones close to the gypsies I know of from the US were the 49'ers; but most of them eventually settled down.
Once in awhile, get outside in fresh air, take a deep breath & with a deep sigh, let out all the things that's bottled up inside you & be free, & you'll get a glimpse of nirvana.

The Everglades are in Florida, the "stars" of 'Swamp People' are cajun and hunt in Louisianna...they are good for nothing I tell you.

I saw some crazy shit in Baltimore when I was there, they have this even called "Otakon" and it...is.....STRANGE. All these nerds big and small dress up like their favorite Japanamation characters and it was very disturbing, I always avoided those kids when I was in school, the ones big into anime and Japanamation....very strange group.

I've never watched American Gypsies but have to imagine its similar to some nomad meets hippy type thing. The shows they have now blow you away. Once I saw 'Swamp people' being aired on the History channel I knew there was zero hope for us now Sad to say...that shit is pretty on point and I run into clones all over the lower Parishes here. Once you get outside of Baton Rouge and lower surrounding areas your ass enters a 5th dimension of WTF'ness. Remember "Southern Comfort" ? bingo! Its a way of life and has been forever. I was into Doomsday Preppers but cannot find it on now? Have to admit, I am very much a prepper of sorts. You have to be able to sustain and continue if things go off the grid and be self sufficient to at least reasonable standards. But some of those featured are loons. The woman sealing thousands of packets of oatmeal inside of her doors and walls....yeh, bat shit loon. They had an older couple that purchased a relic of a sealed missile silo up north at auction for a few thousand bucks. Fully functional underground with multiple acres, air locks and bunkers etc and self sustained seed and vegetation production. Have to say that was pretty cool. Have to wonder what kind of taxes they pay on land like that. But they are fucked if the apocalypse does come because that show just about airs full locations and stock piles of these folks. Oh, so you have a few hundred gallons of fresh spring, a fuel depot, enough food for 18 months and all you have is a bolt action rifle, paint a target on yourself
