Isn't it just common sense to assume that a significant portion of the American populace would be of British or Irish descent? What with formerly colonising a fair chunk of the world and sending criminals to Australia it would also be fair to assume it fairly obvious that English people inhabited other regions of the globe and stayed. Also in the modern age, and with the UK disintegrating, a fair chunk of people have simply upped and left and are doing all kinds of things all over the place.

I would agree with the thesis that 'the English get about a bit'. They do.
