    Default "Gangster" Mickey Cohen

    Mickey Cohen - Boxer

If you have seen "Gangster Squad" or paid much attention to pop culture, then I'm sure you've seen how much was made of infamous mobster Mickey Cohen once being a professional boxer.

Well, he was. He even fought a world champion....and was KO'd in 1.

He wasn't an especially good boxer, or even a decent one if his record is any indication. He was also a tiny man, having fought at bantam weight and being a little over 5 foot.

However, I'd wager that against the common guy close to his size he probably was pretty tough in a street fight.
"You knocked him down...now how bout you try knockin me down ?"

Good mention.. there were few other gangsters who boxed although I cant remember the names..

I know Sammy the Bull Gravano of the Gambinos was trained by Teddy Atlas for a short period and former boss of the Genovese crime family , Vincent Gigante was light heavyweight in the pros.. thats when he got the nickname " The Chin "...

BTW gangster squad was such a shit movie, it was like watching a poor man's Dick Tracy.. I stopped watching half way. Sean Penn sucked as Mickey Cohen.

I came back to this thread to say I was shocked that nobody had mentioned what a shit movie this was. Thank you sir. I though it was a rip off of Untouchables but hokie like Dick Tracy. Any way you figure, it was terrible. So terrible.

It was ehh. Very Hollywood and very little substance. The fist fight at the end was absurd. Robert Patrick was cool at least.

In regards to the actual thread I started here, there was a scene in the movie where Penn was making his goons watch one of his old fights and he tells his bitch "watch what happened when this guy tried to take my title".

He had no title he was 7-11 ! Lol

Yeah, that part reminded me of when they show Pacmans groupies, Manny playing his guitar while they watch one of his terrible shows or listen to his terrible songs haha. I could have forgiven this movie if it was even remotely close to true. Unfortunately Mickey is very well recorded so we know it was BS. Why use a real Mobster to tell a fake story?
