Thread: Gene Tunney Fights

First vs Tommy Gibbons, a real top guy for many years. It took him a long time to get out of the shadow of his brother Mike, the originator of the "St Paul style." They featured excellant defense, a strong jab, a stiff right hand and top level body punching. Tunney, from New York, fought in the same manner and was a bit better at it than Gibbons by this point in time.

Second is Tunney vs Carpentier, Tunney being the taller and larger of the two. Notice, in both fights, how well Tunney punches the body, and he doesn't hit like a guy that couldn't punch. He had 41 kos in 56 wins.

Years ago I bought a copy of that fight from a guy selling tapes in the back of Boxing Illustrated. That was, I think, 23 minutes long and it was something to watch Tunney break that guy down.
