Default Mayweather comments on Racism in Boxing and MMA

"I can't believe they [Ring Magazine] got Andre Ward ranked No. 4 in the pound-for-pound list," Mayweather said in an interview posted Wednesday. "Even though the guy that's ranked No.1 pound-for-pound right now [Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez], you know, you can't argue about that, but without Andre Ward losing a fight, he has to be No. 2. ... I mean, he wins his fights not in good fashion, but in great fashion, and they have him at No. 4? They got some guy ranked No. 9, I don't really know his full name, so I don't want to be disrespectful, but they got a Japanese guy ranked No. 9. They got Andre Ward No. 4, and this guy that's ranked No. 9, we don't even know who he is. I truly believe that racism still exists in the sport of boxing."

"You gotta really look at things like this, when Bernard Hopkins was a middleweight trying to fight Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, and Felix Trinidad, they [the media] said he was calling out smaller guys," Mayweather said. "When the guy Triple G (Golovkin) does it, they don't say s---. Once again, I'm not racist; I'm just saying racism still exists."

"But you look at things like this, Ronda Rousey, you know, I think she fought somewhere like 11 or 12 fights, which is not a bad thing. Laila Ali went undefeated and was dominating too," Mayweather said. "After Ronda Rousey fought I think 9, 10, 11 fights, it didn't even take that long, she got all types of endorsements, movies, and everything. Laila Ali did the same thing in better fashion. Ronda Rousey, she's a good looking woman when she put it on. Laila Ali is a drop-dead gorgeous woman; I mean a naturally beautiful woman and can kick ass, but you never heard them [the media] saying when she had I think somewhere around 10, 11, 12 fights that she was the baddest woman to ever fight on the planet."

"And what's so crazy, I don't really know the McGregor guy; never seen him fight," Mayweather said. "I heard his name actually from one of the runners that works for our company ... he told me about the guy McGregor. They say he talk a lot of trash and people praise him for it, but when I did it, they say I'm cocky and arrogant. So biased! Like I said before, all I'm saying is this, I ain't racist at all, but I'm telling you racism still exists."

A lot of flawed reasoning imo.

Mayweather does have some intelligence in there but not common sense. He needs to keep to promoting and keeping his mouth shut now that he isn't fighting. At least when he was fighting, he could use the excuse that he was promoting his fights.

He was a great boxer with some good business sense but no common sense. I would love to see mayweather go into the octogon and fight McGregor though.

I'm not racist but... (first sign that you're a racist)

It's down to racism that The Ring rank two white fella's in front of Andre Ward. A Japanese fella, that Floyd has never heard of, is ranked no. 9. How dare they rank someone from another country. I'm not racist but.....

In my opinion, racism is never going to stamped out completely. Floyd is naive and racist himself or he wouldn't complain about it. It sounds like, "Hey, don't let anyone get ahead of a black man."

Andre Ward cut his own throat through inactivity.

GGG is looking for money fights. Hey, it a good thing Floyd never did that.

Laila Ali is a beautiful women and a great boxer. MMA and the UFC in particular promotes all it's fighters. I can't think of another sports org. that does a better job of getting it's message across or jumping on a good thing when they see it. Fair of not Rousey is a good thing for MMA and came along at the perfect time. Laila would have been as big or bigger if she had fought in the UFC.

I don't like all the trash talking. I didn't like it when Floyd did it and I don't like it when Conor does it, but the UFC thinks it's the greatest thing in the world and encourages it. Conor delivers on most of his trash talk the same way Ali did when he used to pick the round where he'd get a stoppage. I don't think it's racism, it's just going where the most money is.

The bad thing about considering yourself TBE is that you think it extends to commenting about anything outside of fights themselves.

He's a fool, what else is new. Andre Ward has fallen because he doesn't fight. If the guy had even been marginally active and kept looking good he would likely be number 2, ahead of the all American great white hopes GGG and Kovalev I was kind of surprised it wasn't Inoue he was talking about at number 9. I haven't heard of this other guy either, and as I also can't pronounce his name, I've decided there's no way he could beat any of the black fellas in his division, I'll give FLoyd that one.

Anybody who thinks Floyd is qualified to talk about anything other than rights, lefts, and how much money he's made please raise your hand.

Mayweather's a f*ckin' idiot. It's not bad enough he wanted to eat alone but now he wants to lick the pot too. Just him running his mouth for attention.

So Ward should still be number 2 on the pound for pound list for fighting 1 bum in 3 years. Kind of like calling your retirement and then wanting to come back and be installed at number one on the pound for pound without even fighting first.

I don't recall Hopkins calling out mosely (but ok, he probably did), but I knew that Trinidad and de la hoya were not able to welter anymore. So they went to 154 and probably cutting to 150-152, but not relying on catch weight clauses to validate the legitimacy of the fights with the sanctioning bodies before rehydrating to 170. GGG is calling out someone who has a title in his weight class and can't make the lower weight class anymore and weighs the same if not more on fight night. Canelo's fair game. When GGG can't make 160 anymore then he should move up and fight 168 pounders.

Rousey had 13 fights (9 of which were for a belt) and only 2 lasted more than a round. Before that she was an Olympian. Her mother was an Olympian. She didn't own her nail salon and start fighting (using her height and weight to push punches) at age 21 after realizing he could capitalize on her last name because daddy used the best fighter in the world. If he had said Lucia Ryker, I might have agreed, but then his racist argument would have went out the window.

As for Mcgregor, there are plenty of fighters that don't like his mouth in the ufc. I believe liddel recently said it best when he said you can tolerate him when he delivers like he does. He talked the talk and walked the walk. He didn't talk smack, then tried to give himself every advantage by dictating what the opponent weighed, what gloves he wore, where the fight was held, what drug testing agency was used, withheld what he weighed on fight night and then spent the whole night stiff arming and retreating... because when you clinch in MMA, the ref doesn't come in to save you unless your deadlocked and need to be reset. People cheered floyd for his mouth too when he mopped the floor with corrales, gatti afterwards. So talking like a destroyer and then fighting an exhibition will get you called out... people know the smell of bull$hit...

    Just my opinion, of course....
They want your @$$ beat because upsets make news. News brings about excitement, excitement brings about ratings. The objective is to bring you up to the tower and tear your @$$ down. And if you don't believe that, you're crazy.

His reasoning isnt on point but lots of fight fans are racist i think. Mcgregor is a trash talking arrogant fighter who is white and is hugely popular, Jon Jones is a black fighter who's far better i think and is nowhere near as popular even before his run ins with the law.

Or all one needs to do is go to some other forums haven't been to east side in years due to it just being a racist cestpool. I also think it goes both ways in that white fans are more likely to root for the white guy and black fans for the black guy and so on...then again floyd is financially the rm best fighter ever so...

A lot of any sports fans are racist or all other kinds of stupid, it doesn't mean there is anything systemic going on. Floyd is somehow implying that black fighters are actually held back on account of their race, which is fairly priceless coming from him.

I was going to add he may have more of a case with the UFC as I have thought the same thing, but then I'm not sure any fighters they've had were ever hyped as much as Rousey was, might have just been a sales pitch to try and get as much crossover attention as possible.

How does Floyd miss the fact that the guy has not fought anyone in 5 years? If you are going to play the racism card at least bring up the racism involved. What a dipshit.

McGregor responds in a fashionable way by posting a message to Floyd Mayweather’s Facebook page saying:

    Dear Mr. Mayweather,

I read the other day that you think racism still exists because I talk shit and am loved but when you did it you were hated…would you like a pad or a tampon? The difference between you and me buddy is that I’m IRISH and you are not. When I fight men, women, children, cats and dogs stop for my fights. Forget using skin color as an excuse!!
Also the reason why I am loved is because I have never stepped down to a fight…I am not a man who picks and chooses his fights out of fear. You ruined your legacy to a certain degree because you didn’t have the balls to fight Manny for years…excuse after excuse is what the fans kept hearing from you and now your angry your not loved? Who was the man you fought after Manny?? I don’t think a lot of people out there know because it was one of the worst pay per view ratings of all time. Just remember this…you can have all the money and power in the world and drive all the fastest cars but like I said before precision beats power and timing beats speed wink emoticon enjoy yourself buddy yeah..ya little bitch

Love the man you want to be,
    Conor McGregor

I read his response at lunch and almost shot coffee out of my nose. I guess we're just waiting for the picture of floyd's checks or whatever other stack of cash piled on his kitchen counter again...
