Interview with Markus Beyer

On Saturday WBC super middleweight champion Markus Beyer (34-2, 13 KO's) will step into the ring against "The Scorpion" Sakio Bika (20-1-1, 13 KO's) to defend his title at the Stadthalle Zwickau, Germany. The Australian challenger arrived on Friday in the Free State of Saxony. Beyer will move to Zwickau on Monday. Fightnews.com spoke to the WBC champion about the upcoming fight and his future.

Mr. Beyer, your next opponent, Sakio Bika, is expected as a hard-hitting puncher. Did you change anything in your preparation?

Every fight is another fight. Because of that the preparation ist changing everytime. This time we trained in Berlin an had two training camps in Zinnowitz and Kienbaum.

You'be been boxing now for 26 years. For 10 years you are a professional. Is it hard to motivate yourself again and again?

To motivate yourself again and again is already not so easy. But I know, why and for what I do this. I´m the WBC world champion and I want to keep the title. I have family and friends, which help me. However, it´s hard.

In your division a lot of people talk about Joe Calzaghe. How delightful would it be for you to fight against him?

That would be a highlight for me and a goal too. But now I´m only thinking about my next fight. My focus is on Sakio Bika.

Before your last fight against Alberto Colajanni you had problems with your weight. What about this time?

Actually it was easier to make weight for me, if it´s possible to say that at all in such a way. I was very disciplined and had a good plan regarding what I can eat and when I can eat.

Your coach Ulli Wegner became 64 years old in April. You had your birthday too. Did you celebrate these days?

Not really. I trained, also on my birthday twice. However it was beautiful. My sister and her husband, their sons, my parents and my girl friend visited me and we had a nice calm evening. The birthday cake will follow after the fight.

Zwickau is a home match for you. Do you look forward to it?

That is something special for me. Last year I fought against Danny Green there. The public is simply fantastic. I am pleased to come again to Zwickau. It´s not far away from Schwarzenberg, where I grew up. The arena was sold out in a few hours. That makes me a little bit proud.

What will you do after the fight?

I´m always thinking about such things after the fight. There will be dates with the press. I will work in my agency '12Rounds' again and I´ll try to make holidays with my partner - probably again with our two dogs.

GO BIKA! Hes an aussie....not born here but lives here. His only loss was a close decision to sam soliman, he will come to fight but most likely lose a decision.

I wouldn't call myself a fan...but when he is on...he's entertaining...that being said...I've seen him only 3 times & some highlights.

He won't fight Joe or Kessler...& if he does...he'll lose.

im not particularly a fan, but he's someone i would like calzaghe to beat....dont think he will ever step in with joe though...

I consider Beyer a mediocre champion at best.
