Gloves - Are 8oz gloves killers?
Are 8oz gloves worse than 6oz??
I've had this conversation with a number of people and was wondering what all you lot think.
My theory is that the extra weight from the 8oz gloves cause a heavier more concusive punch, (A bit like being hit with a pillow) but one that doesn't hurt as much as the old 6oz gloves.
Net result - you end up taking more damaging punishment over the course of a fight with the 8oz gloves because of the "protection" they give you.
The weight from the gloves pushes the brain around the skull more than a 6oz, where the impact zone is much smaller and sharper.
What do you think guys? ???
Re: Gloves - Are 8oz gloves killers?
I've never been hit with 6oz gloves, but i've been hit by the same dude in sparring with both 8oz and 10oz and I couldn't really tell the difference.
Re: Gloves - Are 8oz gloves killers?
It depends...usually the bigger the glove the harder you can hit whereas the smaller the easier it is to cut someone.
Liston had 22 oz. gloves made for him, he hit pretty hard
Re: Gloves - Are 8oz gloves killers?
think about the hard hitting heavyweights who hit each other with 10oz gloves
Re: Gloves - Are 8oz gloves killers?
The real question is damage to the fighter getting hit.
Lets say you get hit bare knuckle full in the face, you're gonna go down right? NO I hear you say! Jee you guy's are tough!
But if you were being smacked in the head with a big pillow, which doesn't actually hurt but is rocking your brain from side to side this would surely do more harm over the course of a fight? I have never fought with 6oz gloves but my gut feeling is that they would protect boxers from serious brain injury more than the 8's even though you might lose a few more teeth in the process! ;D

You're telllin me that in most of his PRO fights the man used gloves that were 12 oz, over twice as padded as everyone elses? You may be right, but that just sounds outrageous to me. I can tell you that gettin hit with 16 oz gloves don't hurt as much as gettin hit with 12 oz gloves, which is what I use 90% the time I backyard box with friends and what not. I can also tell you that I lose much of the form, which I didn't have much to begin with probably ;D, on my punches when swingin giant pillow ass 16 oz gloves around. To me 16 oz gloves are pussy and cumbersome. Thats why when they said that Allen Green makes his sparrin partners wear 18 oz gloves I was very surprised.

I disagree... the 2 ounces of weight added will take away from the speed equally as it adds mass... basically the force would be the same, but some 8 oz. gloves are more padded(Mayweather's) and so they are like pillows and cushion the blow on both sides.
