Pryor-Arguello,memorable in more than one way
it was a second water bottle pryor's trainer introduced after the 12th round which he (the trainer) himself mixed. After drinking the unknown substance, Pryor appeared to gain a "second wind" suggesting the bottle may have contained a stimulant. In addition to this fact, there was never a urine test conducted.
Given that he gave the "spiked" drink to Pryor between rounds he would have only had at most 1 minute with the drink in him taking effect, i dont seriously think any drug could immediately get you going again that quickly. Perhaps it was mind games,he told pryor it was spiked so he would believe it. Mind over matter.
Pryor did seem to have unbeleivable stamina that fight. Arguello said it was the only time hed been punched with both fists at the same time ;D
Ive gotta say i thought the second fight was pretty good as well to be honest.
Im a 32 year old Pryor fan, only wish i could have seen him at the time.

Arguello took terrible beatings from Pryor but amazingly he still had a couple of good fights left in him. I saw what I thought was his last fight in 1986 against Billy Costello who was 31-1 at the time Arguello fought him. Costello was a very good light welterweight:

Costello was boxing Arguello's ears off but still got stopped in the 4th round. He got careless and 1 big punch basically finished him. Even after all those years of fighting and the punishment he suffered at the hands of Pryor, Arguello could still punch. His legs were gone though and he was almost stationary.
Although his fights with Pryor are the most well known of Arguello's career he was really a bit past his prime, having slowed down a bit since his earlier fights at lower weights. His peak was probably right around 1981 when he gave Ray Mancini his 1st defeat. Pound for pound Arguello was 1 of the greatest fighters in history, up there with Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Robinson and others.
