thinking about starting to box and have some questions
Hey guys, I'm new here, I'm thinking about starting to box. I'm in good condition I lift weights every day,and run (or some other cardio) every other day. 15 years old, play hockey. there is a gym about 10 min down the road, but I'm not sure if it is good or not. I read some where that before you buy bag gloves and wraps that your trainer should choose the wt. for you, other places say buy 16oz gloves for bag use. Also i need to convince my parents, they don't know that i'm thinking about boxing.
when I was looking at gloves the title gloves didn't look as high quality as everlast, or the ultimate classic gloves that ring side has. any thoughts or any other gloves?also what is better hook-n-loop or lace? (i was thinking hook-n-loop so if i wanted to i could train at home w/out help) thank you for helping if you can.
ht.-5'6"(i think)
wt.-167lbs
Re: thinking about starting to box and have some questions
hook/loop for sure b/c of what you said. how will you tie your own?
You don't have to buy anything to start... the gym should have it all, if you can stomach sharing sweaty gloves. I couldn't so I bought my own, but at 33yo my budget's higher than yours.
Just go and check it out... are the guys welcoming? does anyone appear hurt (ie, jerks and bad form)? is it clean and tidy (a personal thing for me)? is the staff working with guys with mits and on the bags? etc. you might be able to go day-to-day for $8-10 or so... you might want to do that to first check it out.
Re equipment, the guys will be able to show you what to buy from the magazines (ringside) and they'll give you correct length wraps.
Just tell your parents that you'd like to go to train for the upcoming season and you have no intentions on actually competing. You'll light spar in time, but nobody gets hurt. And trust me, boxing is a GREAT workout, even better than the dreaded practice without pucks. ;) I play hockey too....for double the years than you've been alive! Even played some "all-star" or as you yanks call it, "travel hockey."
Re: thinking about starting to box and have some questions
Dont buy everlast gloves because everlast=neverlast. All of the equipment I have bought from them has torn or got damaged very easily. I finally wised up and quit buying all their equipment. I just highly dont recommend everlast because of my experience with them. But its great that you want to start boxing, it is a great sport and most of all, a great art. And trust me, once you get in and start, you will get hooked. Once you step in that ring for the first time and all that adrenaline is running, its just straight up addicting. You are sure to love it.
Re: thinking about starting to box and have some questions
Thanks for the tip on everlast stuff. I asked my parents what they thought my mom was afraid that I might hurt my neck/head from getting hit, so I told her that I would work in some exercises to strengthen my neck. My dad said that we could check it out when we get back from vacation, in a week. my older brother wants to get into Brazilian ju-jitsu, my dad wants both of us to do that when taxes come back. that was fine by me, we made a deal that he'd pay for ju-jitsu and i would pay for boxing.
i'm looking for something to get the same thrill that i got wrestling, and i think that boxing will do that. the Marine Corps recruiter was over today he said that the training you do for both boxing and ju-jitsu would be beneficial, and that the bases have both those or if I wanted to Camp Pendleton has a UFC gym.
Von I love hockey, I play both travel hockey, and high school hockey. and got recruited for the junior national tryouts next year.
thanks for the help you guys.
Re: thinking about starting to box and have some questions
You thinking about joining the marines?
Ju-Jitsu would be good, but I would only want to do boxing.
Re: thinking about starting to box and have some questions
Yes, I am knowing that I am joining the Marines, the Few and the Proud.
haven't signed anything yet though the recruiter is coming back over tomarrow.
Re: thinking about starting to box and have some questions
let me get this straight.... you're trying out for team USA juniors? ie, to play in the world junior championships? Or do you mean the national development team in Ann Arbor?
screw the marines. and screw the NCAA. play in the OHL. You'll get 68 games a year, won't have to wear a cage and will have the chance to drop the gloves for the scouts. Email Mike Velucci of the Plymouth Whalers and ask him for a walk-on tryout. It's a top-notch club and is owned by Peter Karmanos. Chad LaRose played there and is now a Hurricane. I live 5 minutes from the compuware center in Plymouth and work in Ann Arbor so if you have any questions let me know.
Re: thinking about starting to box and have some questions
Yes I mean the junior national team for the USA, but for roller hockey. I play 4a hockey as a goalie as a freshman, they came to me after we won the high school championship.the closest ice rink is the one the thrashers practice at, thats an hour and a half away and coast a pretty penny cause its ice hockey in Georgia. but i have been intending to play ice when i can drive, next Feb. but if that offer still stands in a year I'll take it!
thank you for that piece of info but I can't just let the Marines go.
sorry this is off topic.

I am an ex-British paratrooper, and we too like to shoot civilians.
Go for it!
