Preparations for my first Amatuer Bout
I need to lose 10 pounds. I will "probably not fight in one month" but I'm going to train as if I am. BUT I am definetly going to fight.
Any recomendations on my first fight?
The reason I will probably not fight in one month is
1) I miraculously still have a small gut. I'm going to run to see if that will get rid of it. Losing 10 pounds will guarantee the loss of a gut.
2) I need to spar regularly. Although I have been training very well and my conditioning is great (I can keep my hands up using 16 oz gloves for more than 15 rounds). My conditioning still isn't "fight great."
Recommendations of how to spar regularly, since I'm still a beginner. Twice a week, 3 three minute rounds? Losing a gut should happen if I run and up my ab work right?
The worst part of preparing is that I don't have a good trainer to watch over me. The trainer here is too busy with other guys and also I don't think he knows THAT much about boxing.
Recommend driving once a week to Phoenix (2 half hour drive) to find a good trainer that will help me once a week in sparring?
Any psychological training to get me prepared to?
I've seen so many fighters get scared on fight night and fight jerky/sloppy and great awesome gym fighters turn into tired fighters on the stage in an actual amatuer fight.
Re: Preparations for my first Amatuer Bout
The most important thing to a fighter in the ring is knowing he has a trainer that is going to be there for him/her when they fight...
I have alot of fighters in my gym, but, it doesnt stop me from making my rounds and doing a little something with my fighters...It reminds them that I am there for them and that I am aware of their progress as a fighter...
Sure, I do believe that alot of a fighters training is individual effort, we as trainers can only push a fighter so far to train...You as a fighter are the one stepping into battle everytime you go into the ring, will you feel better knowing that the man in the corner KNOWS you as a fighter and will PUSH you to your potential???
If you are unsure of this, no matter how well you train, I wouldnt fight for that trainer....If you win, who gets all the props for your accomplishment??
Good luck and keep your head up....I am sure that if you look around, you may find someone in your area with a little knowledge of what to do and that person may beable to help you...
Re: Preparations for my first Amatuer Bout
I am in the same boat as you. I am 22 and live in Little Rock. I don't really have a gym close buy that would help me. I built a rack for my heavy bag outside and I alternate days between weights and my bag and jog about 2 miles a day. I am in great shape at 170lbs, but I've considered going to 165. I spar about once a week with friends and hope to get into an amature fight soon. I just don't know if I'm getting to old or where to go from here. I need a Trainer to help set up fights and would like to get into golden gloves or maybe more. I am also thinking about trying the tough man contest in march.
Any advice would be great.

Little Rock has a few good Gyms down there, Well I thought they did... Are they gone or something??
Call around....I believe the Amateur LBC for that region is the Missouri Valley LBC, goto USABoxing.org for more info and locations of possible gyms...
I will take a look around myself, I know a few coaches from that LBC, maybe they can help out...
Good Luck,
Coach
Re: Preparations for my first Amatuer Bout
Thank you very much! I have heard of a few gyms like Gold's gym and one called Bowman Fitness but I would like to find a place where someone could help me. I have a good amount of equipment at home, but would love to train with someone who could help me reach my potential. Do you feel that 22 is to old to get started?
Thanks,
Tommy
