I've Noticed Most Boxers...
Inherit their boxing trainers fighting style.
I was reading this weeks boxing news and it was mentioned that barry McGuigans son who is a 17 year old middleweight amatuer 2-0. Barry said that his son fights just like him. Barry sAys that he worked really hard training him and now the kid fights just like him, even has his fathers trade mark left hook to the body.
Look at the Brendan Ingle Gym fighters. They all fight the same, prince naseem, Johnny nelson, and the youngest prospect Kell BRook, all fight the same regardless of the size. Interesting. All good/great fighters!
Now look at Cus d'amato's fighters. Jose Torress, Floyd Patterson, Mike Tyson, all had the same style of bobbing and weaving. They were very successful, Proven style!
The pro gym i train at (to learn how to actually box) the trainer trains most people the same depending on the stature. Most guys at the gym are boxer/punchers, its more a fighters style but bobbing and weaving, Good defense is good offense. the empasis on the style is to pressure the other fighter, get in close WITHOUT GETTING HIT and land the big shots.
Now the amatuer gym i train at (to get the amatuer fights.) they dont have a proper train, they change trainers every season. They all have their own style, nothing proven or special. they seem to have figured what works for them and put it all together.
I think having a proper trainer is very important for the reasons above. Do any of you have the same problem with trainers in amatuer boxing gyms? luckily i have a proper trainer who can teach me proper. :)
Re: I've Noticed Most Boxers...
Don't forget Ali and Sugar Ray Lenard... ;)
Re: I've Noticed Most Boxers...
Genetic memory and muscle memory plus enviroment makes it happen. Plus you never hear of the hundreds of failures.
Re: I've Noticed Most Boxers...
What a good thread thinking about it, and well put together cc
Re: I've Noticed Most Boxers...
That is true you do see a lot of trainers mold their fighters into one style but...What you see isn't always what you get.....You used Cus and his guys for EG..Tyson and Floyd had the patent Peek A boo style taught by Cus but just because it worked for them doesnt mean every fighter can use that style..Even if he knows it perfectly....That style is meant for shorter fighters...It helps them get in close and do the damage where they are most effective...Tyson and Patterson both had short arms...They needed to be in closer against bigger men...The bob and weave is to avoid the punches the jabbing in is to keep the other guy on offense on the way in then they go to work ...Body head hooks uppercuts is the main arsenal opf that style...Not good if you are 6'5"...A good trainer knows if his style is right for a guy...You just see thew ones who master it...a really good trainer adjust styles according to the fighter...Not the fighter to his style
Re: I've Noticed Most Boxers...
Ex fighters training offsprings in theory should not be to hard. If they dont know what they are working with then nobody does, coming from the same Genes. but with egos there can be problems, as the two have had a different learning curve in their formative years. Mayweather comes to mind as an example and case study. On the other hand you have the Calazaggies, been together from the year dot, an old Father and Son act if I ever saw one. Lots of love and respect in that camp.I personaly think Enzos done a brilliant job, Hes evovled with Joe, great team.
Cus always had good backup with his fighters financialy there was a lot of money spent getting it right. There were a lot of failures, but when they got it right they were big succeses. Dundee had an easy job with Ali and Lenoard on first looking, but in theory it just might have been the hardest both great fighters with egos to match. Angelo handled it, probably doesnt get the credit He deserves.
There are coaches about who in their own way are just as good who never get the breaks, who never have the raw talent to work with. People in the game know who they are, there are a lot of great trainers in the Amatuer side who produce year in year out good fighters. They just love boxing and are happy doing what they do without reward or glory. There reward is spotting talent and nuturing it so it florishes. I take my hat off to these men Thank you
Re: I've Noticed Most Boxers...
Getting a somebody and moulding him into a good/great fighter takes alot of time and patience.
My trainer has been teaching me for about 2 n a half months, i already knew the basics but he taught me alot of other things, its taken ages but i have improved tremendously.
NOW the amatuer gym i train at, there is no such thing as moulding someone, they almost dont teach you!! in gyms like that you cant learn, i believe everyone needs a proper trainer.

Funny you say that about Dundee..I was talking with someone the other day who was saying that If it wasnt for Ali and Leonard we wouldn't even know who he was...Also that he had an easy time because they were fighters with the talent already there...Tried to explain to him that trainers are just as important as the fighters if not more at times...( EG how many times did Dundee stall for time in Ali bouts..Self admittedly..Ripping gloves..distracting refs between rds ) a lot of people dont realize even though its bending the rules.. having a guy like that can mean the difference between a W or L...Dundee either gets praised or bashed..nothing in between
Re: I've Noticed Most Boxers...
Its not the reasoning or angle Im taking it from dax. With Ali he was his instigater and his man to man skills were good in a time when it was politicaly incorrect to be around Ali I think He handled it superb. With Lenoard Jacobs did all the work, Dundee was there the last 2 week before a fight. I think Hank Caplan had a lot of input early on with the matchmaking of the pair of them. But the final say was down to Dundee, and He got it spot on.

I heard that myself ( dundee only coming the last couple weeks before the fight itself) I have heard of other big name trainers doing that also...I guess the theory in that is once you are on that level your 2nd can get the fighter through all the everyday training that should be a no brainer (running mitts bags ect) then the head trainer comes in for the fine tuning...must be nice to make a few mil for two weeks work lol
Re: I've Noticed Most Boxers...
ali n leonard, forgot about em, however didnt know dundee fought like ali? :dontknow:
