Pacman suing hospital

GENERAL SANTOS CITY - The World Boxing Council super-featherweight champion, Manny Pacquiao, is contemplating charges against a private hospital here who allegedly refused to treat his dying relative.

"I am consulting my lawyers for filing appropriate charges against the General Santos City Doctor’s Hospital for its refusal to give treatment to my dying relative who failed to pay the hospital’s demanded down payment of P50,000," Pacquiao said in Filipino at a press briefing here on Saturday.

Armando Jamora Jr., 22, a resident of Kiamba, Sarangani, was taken to the hospital after developing "high fever" Thursday afternoon. He died more than an hour later without proper treatment, Pacquiao said.

The hospital administrators "demanded P50,000 for a down payment. My relatives offered a P30,000 advance but hospital authorities refused, saying the entire amount had to be paid," he said.

Ernesto Jamora, the father of Pacquiao’s wife, Jinky, tried to reason with hospital administrators but they won’t believe the patient was the boxer’s relative.

Pacquiao said hospital staff started to attend to Jamora only after a hospital attendant recognized Pacquiao’s stepfather.

"I am also planning to ask the help of the Sangguniang Panlungsod and the local government to conduct investigation into the death of my wife’s first cousin," he said.

"If they did this to us, how much more to the poor. I am sure the needy will die unattended at the hospital," Pacquiao added.

The Manila Times tried to get the side of the hospital on Sunday. Gina Sauro, the hospital’s information officer, said hospital officials were not available for an interview because it was a Sunday.
