Check out my speedbag platform
for those of you who don't know me, almost everyone!!, I'm a part-time pro painter with a full wood shoppe. So I decided to build myself a platform since a good one is hundreds of dollars. This one is two piece laminated red oak. Since it's pricy, at about $6/ft, I decided just to go rectangular. I glued and pipe clamped them, filled the low spots with wood filler and sanded level. The next step is to hand plane the corners and edges round, sand them smooth, then a final overall sand with 400grit paper,. Oil prime, and black melamine paint that I'll spray with my HVLP guns. Then sand and then spray a satin polyurethane clearcoat for beaty and protection. The dinensions are 2" thick by 16" wide by "30" long. Approx weight is 25lb. This sucker BURIES most commercial platforms, even ones in gyms. Did I mention there's some sanding involved?
Scroll all the way down. The bag, loose fit, is to give you an idea of size. Yes, this is my website.

Re: Check out my speedbag platform
Scrap, for you, double the price. lol. ;)
The one thing I don't have is a thickness planer, let alone a 20" industrial B******. Otherwise I would have planed it, sanded it, then filled imperfections with the dust and shellac, then stained it honey oak. But because I had to use wood filler along the joint, and fillers don't like to stain the same color as wood, it would be slightly noticeable. Thus, it's getting an opaque color, like gym platforms. Black melamine.
Re: Check out my speedbag platform
here's the finished product. It has about 7 coats of sprayed oil enamel paint with some satin paste wax to make it pretty. I think I'll keep this one and make some for sale on ebay. Yes, they'll be round.

Re: Check out my speedbag platform

Hey How Much Would One Of Your Platforms Cost????
Re: Check out my speedbag platform
Would you be happy with rectangular one? I made mine that way because I only plan on hitting it one way. ie, round is a waste of wood, IMO. If I make them round I'll need to haul my bandsaw out of my mom's basement, which I have no idea when that'll be. I reckon if I do make any I'll sell them for about $100 for a rectangular one. The wood alone for this one ran me about $65. Plus labor is a bitch. The real problem is I wouldn't know your swivel and wouldn't be able to sell you the proper mounting brackets. To address these issues, I was thinking of making a couple and selling them with a swivel included, that way it would come with properly drilled holes. It would be up to the buyer to find a way to mount it. But I have an idea for that, too! I'm working on it and have to go price a few things. I'm also looking into different woods and paints, even epoxy coatings for durability.
All said and done, maybe $125-150 or so for one that would easily destroy pro platforms that go for several hundred. Give me a few days to research some options and my costs to produce them.
