Warren: - Do you want Calzaghe, Roy?
Warren - Do you want Calzaghe, Roy?
02.08.06 - By Mark Pickering: Frank Warren has declared that WBO/IBO Super Middleweight Champion Joe Calzaghe would welcome a showdown with Roy Jones Jr. after the four-time world champion outpointed Prince Badi Ajamu on Saturday. Jones, 37, posted his 50th career win in a one-sided clinic in Boise, Idaho, to end a run of three defeats and temporarily silence his detractors. The American announced in his post-fight interview that he’s targeting a shot at Calzaghe, which the Welshman’s camp promptly responded too.
“If he does want to carry on fighting, then a meeting with Calzaghe makes sense and I'd be very interested in promoting it,” said Warren.
The Pride Of Wales was expected to face Jones at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, in July but the fight did not materialise due to the American’s financial demands and Calzaghe being forced off his homecoming card with a recurrence of his hand injury sustained against Evans Ashira in September.
"If he is serious, all Jones has to do is pick up the phone and get in contact, and then we can talk."
While Calzaghe is forecasted to defend his super-middleweight titles later this year, a bout with Jones would assumably be contested at light-heavyweight forcing him to step up for the first time in his professional career. .
Alternatively, the double champion may entertain the option of fighting the winner of September 2nd’s IBF light-heavyweight clash between Glen Johnson and Sheffield, England’s Clinton Woods at the Bolton Arena.

Re: Warren: - Do you want Calzaghe, Roy?

Calzaghe was at one time but Hopkins being the smart guy that he is didn't wanna know ;)
"I have no problems taking the fight on his territory," said the 31-year-old Calzaghe. "My message to him is: 'You want it, you got it.' He can have it anywhere and any time."
Calzaghe underlined his determination to get the fight, laying down a challenge to Hopkins. "Don't find an excuse to let our fight slip away," he said. "I have taken up your challenge to face you in America, so honour your words."

why is it so hard for fights above welter to just get done?....everyone talks, but no one gets in the ring IMO....that goes for all sides of the table.....
Re: Warren: - Do you want Calzaghe, Roy?
Above welter? take a look directly at welter right now, criminal.

yup welter and above.....

Welter and above? take a look at light...........just kidding ;D
Re: Warren: - Do you want Calzaghe, Roy?
I don't think this will happen as Jones will price himself out of it
Simple as
And if it does then Calzaghe would systematically batter him into the retirement he should have took 3 years ago 8)
Calzaghe v's Allan Green is Joes most competetive fight out there right now IMO.

[/quote] ::** that's a pretty bold statement there.......I don't think either one of them ducked Calzaghe.....B-HOP was setting records and RJJ was going for bigger and better things (Heavyweight title anyone?) so I think the ducking call is a bit far fetched.......by the way...Is it me or does Joe C comes up with injuries at the most opportune times??????
Re: Warren: - Do you want Calzaghe, Roy?
NO
there is plenty of Video footage showing the state of his hand after the Ashira fight ;)
Jones has Ducked most of our boys over the years
It all goes back to Benn Wheelchairing Mclellan mate ;)
Calzaghe (if they fought) would Ahhnialate him with ease.

I wont fault Joe for his injuries, on the other hand thats a huge problem I have in boxing is the Ref and judges, if I was a great Brithish champion or fighter I would be afraid to get my title gaffed from me for political reasons if I came to the US, like wise if I was a great American champion or fighter I would be afraid to travel as well, so as are conondrum we face here.......We can as 2 nations( US, Great Britian) can sling arrows about each others fighters and calling them cowards and duckers for not traveling(which is idiotic and counter-productive) since it is a problem both face...Unfortunately I see no resolve to this anytime soon

Please Buddy!!!!, The fact that you bring McClellan vs Benn and twist it your way amazes me, seeing that was one of the most crooked officiating Home Cooked fights probably on record...
1) Benn was TKO'D in the 1st round not to mention he benefitted from a long count...Dont dare argue about that either when McClellan overwhelmed Benn he was out on his feet couldnt even keep his hands up and intelligently defend himself and fell through the ropes...
2)When the piece of Shit crooked Ref gave Benn the long count he also held McClellan back on 2 Occasions for no reason other than to let Benn recover....
3) Why was Benn allowed to Club and punch McClellan on the back of the head the whole fight????(Cause Benn alway did that in his fights)
4) That son of a bitch crooked Ref should of been thrown out of Boxing he did no one a favor that nite..
The fact that you would venerate and celebrate such a fight amuses me seeing that fight was such a Black eye on British boxing IMO...
Because of that officiating job you Ended the Normal life of a Great American fighter and Prematurely ended the career of a Great British fighter Seeing that he was Shot and never the same after that fight.. Hardly anything to be proud of ::**That is a perfect reason Why any fighter would want to stay on his turf whether he was British or American
Calzage is Great but to say if he fought Hopkins or Jones years ago and would have annihalated is ludicrous and not a well thought of intelligent statement....
