Last seen scoring a dominating fourth-round TKO over previously unbeaten South African Silence Mabuza last November, hard-punching IBF Bantamweight Champion Rafael Marquez is looking to use the eight-month layoff since that victory to his advantage.
While preparing for his rematch with Mabuza, scheduled to take place inside the Montbleu Resort Casino & Spa in beautiful Stateline, Nevada, Marquez took a minute of his time to speak exclusively with FightNews from his training camp in Mexico.
In your first fight against Silence Mabuza, you were up 30-26 on all of the judges’ scorecards when the fight was stopped; how comfortable did you feel during the short bout?
The thing is that I was very well prepared for that fight. He was coming in undefeated; we prepared accordingly. Thanks to God we prepared well enough to win.
Who do you think learned more about the other during your first bout? Now that he has faced you in the ring, do you think that will allow him to better prepare against you?
We always learn more during a fight than on film, preparing. He’s fast and he hits hard, we knew that and I was reminded during the fight. We know this time he’s going to come out hard and we know this fight will end in a knockout. God willing it will be a victory for us.
During that bout you had an issue making weight, were you having real trouble or was it just miscalculating the cutting of weight?
No, I had a little problem making weight. I had a bit of a cold and it was a little harder than it needed to be, but I was fine. I’m perfectly fine right now for the fight; I’m just barely three pounds over the weigh limit with a week to go.
You have held the IBF Bantamweight Belt since 2003; do you plan on moving up to 122 lbs?
I’ve made that decision; I will not fight again at this weight. This will definitely be my last fight at bantamweight. I’m moving up to 122 lbs for my next bout.
Who would you have liked to fight at 118 lbs before moving up? Many fans were hoping to see you face Johnny Gonzalez to unify titles?
I’d love to fight Johnny Gonzalez. He would have to meet me at 122 lbs because I am not fight anymore at 118 lbs.
Who would you like to face in the super bantamweight division? Daniel Ponce de Leon? Israel Vazquez? Maybe Oscar Larios?
I want to fight true champions. Only the true Champions at 122 lbs. Fighting champions is what I want to do and of course it’s what gets the biggest purse

CC back brother.I am a big fan of the Marquez brothers and the nore fights I see of them,the more I cannot believe that they are not big stars,I mean Rafa was 1 punch KO power and is just excititng to watch and JMM is a pure technician,smooth,stylish with banging power too. They might be in their 30's but I think they still have quite a few big fights left in them.

Yelp. I remember the late 80's and early 90's Don Kong use to have 4 to 5 title fights on one Pay per view card. its was great. Whitker -Chavez undercard was like Jesse James Leija -vs Azumah Nelson, along with Terry Norris defending his title maybe Carbijal defending his title can't remember , but this was like a common Don King pay per view situation back then . the good ole days, when the boxing dollar went alot further.
