Wacko & his issues with Kassim Ouma...
Okay...it's as simple as this...Wacko got issues with Kassim Ouma...& I really need help in sorting this out...
Here we go.
First of all...back when Ouma burst onto the scene...I was impressed. I was floored by his skills & I was even more impressed with his attitude & the story of his life...honestly...I still am.
The thing is...of late...the effects of "the Dream" have worn off on me a bit.
I can't put my finger on it...it's almost that I want to believe in Ouma...but I see too many flaws in him to jump on board the boat for fear of it sinking.
First & foremost, the leak that bothers me the most is in his defense is my main issue...but then again...he seems to be able to take everything that is thrown at him & he seems to just take it in stride. But if the right amount of pressure comes along...all boats can be sank. So let's get offa that wishy washy analogy & get on to my next issue...
Second...quite often I wonder which Ouma's going to show up for the big game. Will it be the lethargic Ouma that lost to Karmazin? Will it be the Ouma that drew with Coker? Will it be the Ouma that got blasted out in one round by Silva? Will it be the Ouma that throws 100+ punches in a round?
You just never know...but he does make it entertaining each time...win, lose, or draw...
So then I wonder what is it? Why is it that I can't get on the Ouma boat ride? He's a good kid & a damned fine fighter...so what is it?!?!?!
Maybe it's the fact that HBO has pulled a "Taylor Trip" & bet the farm on the kid, hyping him to the point of God like status?
Help me here people...because I just don't know...I'm often critical & overly critical of fighters...even my favorite fighters, so that I can see all the angles of said fighter. For every flaw there is in Ouma...there's something that reinforces the fact that Ouma is a great fighter & a great entertainer.
Don't just tell me that I'm being overly criticl & to stop analyzing everything...I want your opinions on Ouma & where you stand.
Re: Wacko & his issues with Kassim Ouma...
The defense is annoying because he can be better at it. He's got some natural slickness, its not like he's a Mayorga, and for a guy that's an all out pressure fighter when he's on he doesn't get hit all that much considering he's almost always in punching range. But he seems almost lazy about it at times, or just disinterested in defense. Like last night it was like he felt Powell's power, decided it wasn't anything to worry about and just went all out offensively.
As far as being HBO hyped maybe he has but I don't think its to the same level of a Jermaine Taylor. Yes, his life story is brought up every single time but I guess they figure maybe some people tuning in aren't big boxing fans and haven't heard it. But he had to beat a whole lot more solid fighters to get in HBO than Jermaine. Verno Phillips in his 13th fight, and all the way up fighting solid guys and then had to win a title just to get on an HBO undercard versus Jantuah. Jermain Taylor, not that its his fault, was pretty much handed things, an HBO showing in like his 15th fight and was being hyped up bigtime by HBO before he ever fought a really credible opponent. But Jermain has ended up proving that he belongs and it wasn't really his fault anyway.

That's the main gripe with me...I knew someone would start hitting heads on nails when the surface was scratched.
He's def lazy at times. That's a biggie for me. Sometimes he's a thrill to watch...other times...I'd rather watch paint dry.

Agreed.
Re: Wacko & his issues with Kassim Ouma...
Well I don't think he's lazy overall, he's always working offensively but he can lazy on defense.
I always like watching him fight but I do understand that at times when he fights any round is almost exactly similar to the preceeding round. Part of it is the lack of power, each round is just him throwing a shitload of punches, landing a lot of them, its just one three punch combination after another, and not that its a bad thing, but at times the fights can lack drama cause he's in total control but he's not putting the other guy away. It doesn't bother me, but I think it does bother some people.
Re: Wacko & his issues with Kassim Ouma...
Could it be inconsistency?

Yeah it's the inconsistency for me, I mean the kids been match tough his whole career, gotta respect that. But you never know what he's gonna do. His defense is sloppy, but the amount of punches he throws is impressive. I think for me it's that he loses fights he should win, or makes fights that should be that difficult hard.
Re: Wacko & his issues with Kassim Ouma...
ouma is a naturally Lazy person (like many boxers) ..lol seriously though as hard as u have to work out to box... many boxers stay with fighting for a living rather than work a normal 9-5 ...wouldnt u too?
dont forget oumas been shot twice so maybe that effects him?
i like ouma but i dont like him being over hyped ..hes just a very good exciting prize fighter and thats it

Very true. Good points... :coolclick:
Re: Wacko & his issues with Kassim Ouma...
Just my opinion, but I partially agree with Ouma being lazy. But it also seems to me that Ouma doesnt' have the fully commited desire to be the best he can be. He has serious skills, but doesn't capitalize completely. I question if Ouma really wants it bad enough.

Beat me to it, stole the words from my mouth.
Ever since the first time I saw Ouma, his body language, attitude often give off the impression that he can take it or leave it. He has no real fire in his belly IMO. Sure he throws a lot of punches sometimes (which can be mistaken for desire and fire in said belly) but thats just when he knows hes got a fighter beat e.g. Powells lack of power encouraged him to pour on the punches.
I like Ouma, admire him for the way he has made a success out of his life, but like Wacko struggle to throw myself on the bandwagon.
In answer to your question Wacko Id say that the reason you (& me) are struggling to throw yourself into Ouma is he doesnt have that one base thing that attracts us to all fighters. Regardless of what style, nationality or personality of fighter you generally like, we always look for one thing. Desire. Sure Ouma has the desire to box, but as means said earlier, this is likely to be just he has more desire to earn a living boxing rather than at a 9 to 5, or boxing is the only way he believes he can earn a living. Either way he doesnt have that heart of a lion, that fire in the belly, that strong desire that attracts everyone to their favourite fighters so despite his skills and clear talent, I dont think I can ever throw myself fully behind him.
Re: Wacko & his issues with Kassim Ouma...
I don't think he treats every fight as life or death, cause when you've been through the kinds of things that he has losing a fight is not the end of the world, its just losing a fight.
But he's willing to fight anybody, unlike a lot of fighters who say they're willing to fight anybody but really aren't, and he's always fun to watch, at least IMO he is. I don't make it out like he's some kind of perfect fighter, he's not.
Re: Wacko & his issues with Kassim Ouma...
I got to say , I really enjoy watching Ouma fight, he is non stop action.. and really, any fighters from the continent of Africa bring a thrill factor to the table, because they come to fight, not to rest or to pose but come to FIGHT. Usually they are in excellent conditioning and have a high determination factor.. Ben Tackie is a good example yes he loses some fights , but I have never seen a bad Tackie fight, I think Ouma is same way. I like his aggressive approach, and the way he just walk his opponents down and makes them crumble. That is Ouma’s strength as a fighter, I don’t think he should change anything. IMO

I think the defense will come with Ronnie Shields

I hope so cause when he's at his best throwing out a million punches he kinda reminds me of Pryor.

Tsk tsk.. Oumafan. Tsk tsk. You are darn right he is not a Mayorga, he lacks power, and has yet to win three world titles. Now I like Ouma, and honestly Wacko you bastard, you need to take a freakin chill pill and stop worryin so much. IMO HBO, Manny and Larry at least were hypin Powell and criticizing Ouma more than anything really. Ouma has done good recently he stopped a guy, Cuevas that Taylor could not, and looks on track to regain his world title from that fraud Spinks. Ouma can be inconsistent but he is a very talented and relaxed fighter, and a very good one. Now NOBODY is as hyped as Jermain Taylor, period. He is HBO's new cash cow and I look forward to the day they use him as a fall guy for their new up and coming star then toss him to the curb like a cheap piece of meat.
