James Toney puts it all on the line.
James Toney puts it all on the line.
On September 2nd, James "Lights Out" Toney will engage in a WBC elimination bout against one of boxing’s most feared fighters, Samuel "The Nigerian Nightmare" Peter. The fight will be telecast on Showtime Championship Boxing. WBC President Jose Sulaiman has gone on record as saying that the winner of this fight will challenge the new WBC Heavyweight Champion, Oleg Maskaev.
Re: James Toney puts it all on the line.
The clock is running on James Toney, he is no spring chicken, it's a now or never move if he is going to lead that division (it suck's) I am surprised he is still fighting on such a high level considering Roy Jones looks like he is long gone.
Re: James Toney puts it all on the line.
It's going to be one hell of a fight. Toney doesn't get nearly enough credit for his boxing achievements.
I mean he's 38 years old guys! He's from the Benn, Eubank era and he's going to face off against the biggest puncher in boxing right now.
I'm rooting for him, hoping he can pull this one off but it's a huge test for him.
Peter can't box but he certainly can bang and he's a dangerous guy to get in the ring with.
I'd hate to see James Toney get knocked out, he's a proud man and I don't think he would handle that at all well.

"James Toney puts it all on the line." Uh, do you mean all alleged 270 Lbs. of him? ::**
Re: James Toney puts it all on the line.
Toney definetly deserves props for taking this fight. Don't forget he is still the mandatory challenger for the WBC.. Well now the winner of this fight is, but that's exactly why Toney deserves credit.. He could have just sat on his #1 contender status like most any other fighter would have done... Instead he takes a "tune up" against a guy who is far more dangerous than the WBC champ.. And CC Bilbo people do forget how long Toney has been in the game noone else currently has had anywhere near his longevity at the top level.

yeh true brother!!
and people forget how hes rightfully dominated 5 wieght classes, had he not failed a drug test after whoopin ruiz!!
hes been the man to beat for years no matter the wieght class and hes still got skills at such a late period in his career, he looks like a slob now but he can still hang with the badasses
Re: James Toney puts it all on the line.
yeah its amazing, he is from the eubank n benn era and is still competing at the highest level! he by far my favourite fighter in boxing.
i like the fact he is very confident, back in 91' he publicly admitted that one day he will challenge tyson in the HW's. and he did!
should be a good fight, cant wait.

It amazes me never really features in any pound for pound lists, I guess because he isn't a world champ in the heavyweight division, but if you consider how many fights he's had and who he's been in with I can't think of anyone who has a more impressive record.
And never been stopped. When you've had 77 fights that is some fucking record!
He's probably my favourite non British fighter hence the avatar. A short fat bastard who talks shit and loves to wind people up, he's my role model!

Imagine Eubank or Benn trying to fight at HW.I cant.
I never would have thought he would be fighting at HW when he was been interviewed by Jonathan Ross all thoes years ago.
Re: James Toney puts it all on the line.
James Toney love or hate him has been a GREAT fighter over the years, period.
Re: James Toney puts it all on the line.
I can't wait for this fight, I hope Toney takes Peter to school & puts on a clinic! If Toney wins here I'd much rather see him face Wlad than Oleg. He doesn't have a lot of time left. The fans would wanna see this fight & it would make the most money for all involved. Makes sense!
Re: James Toney puts it all on the line.
I really hope Toney comes in lighter. His output was suffering against Rahman and he seemed off balance all too often...surely the negative critisism has wormed its way into his stubborn brain somehow??? If not, Toney wont be around for very much longer.

Yeah I agree.. But I hope, HOPE, that the reason he is taking this fight is because he realized himself how shat he was against Rahman and he knows he needs to prove that he can get back into great form and rebound. That's being optimistic though, because he may just think Peter sucks and he'll whip him and then Oleg and blah blah.. Which honestly he probably could do. That's how bad the division is. Toney could go on being a fatass and as long as he doesn't face Wlad, won't lose and become champ..
Re: James Toney puts it all on the line.
i could have imagined eubank in HW, He did really well against a very good cruiserweight - carl thompson! thompson later admitted that he should have lost both fights. eubank mentions this.
Toney is a throwback, in his prime he was fighting once a month or two months, unlike todays champs.
he defense is so awesome.

Yeah he fought Reggie Johnson something like a month after he upset Michael Nunn. Crazy.
