Cotto Vs Urkal ...for hatton's vacant WBA Welter belt
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and Showtime are sorting though possible opponents for junior welterweight titlist Miguel Cotto and welterweight belt holder Antonio Margarito to face in their Dec. 2 doubleheader in Atlantic City, N.J.
Margarito, who will open the telecast, probably will face Joshua Clottey, Arum told ESPN.com. That's the easy part. Clottey was in Las Vegas for last week's Rahman-Maskaev heavyweight title fight and to meet with Arum, who said they are close to a deal.
Cotto's situation is a little more unclear. However, the Puerto Rican star is moving up to welterweight and it is possible that his debut at the weight could be a for a world title.
Should title holder Ricky Hatton drop back down to junior welterweight to challenge Juan Urango for his old belt -- Hatton's most likely move -- Hatton would vacate the 147-pound belt he won in May rather than face mandatory challenger Oktay Urkal of Germany.
Arum said Cotto could wind up facing Urkal for the vacant belt on the Showtime card. It would be contingent upon Carlos Quintana stepping aside to allow the fight.
Quintana's June 24 victory over Joel "Love Child" Julio put him in position to either challenge the winner of a Hatton-Urkal bout or to challenge for the vacant belt.
Ron Katz of Northeast Promotions, which promotes Quintana, said they are open to making a deal with Top Rank.
"We've been entertaining offers from different promoters, Top Rank included, about the possibility of making some sort of deal with regard to Quintana," Katz said. "If it was with Top Rank, we would have to figure out a short term plan for Quintana that would allow Cotto to fight Urkal for the vacant title. Anything is possible. We're open to the idea, but it depends on the nature of the deal."

What a prize, that big domestic showdown with Witter! Hatton breaks America! Yeah right ::**
Re: Cotto Vs Urkal ...for hatton's vacant WBA Welter belt
After Hatton bets Urango he will fight JLC and then after that,I have no idea. Unify?
CC for the news City of G,looking forward to the fights, especially Tony's with the dangerous Clottey.
Re: Cotto Vs Urkal ...for hatton's vacant WBA Welter belt
Cotto-Urkal is just as bad of a fight as Hatton-Urango.
Re: Cotto Vs Urkal ...for hatton's vacant WBA Welter belt
Looks like Cotto and Hatton may never meet. Cotto's gradually moving into 147 territory. Hatton tasted it and decided it was much safer down at 140.

Puh-leeze!
Atleast Urkal has fought a live body or two on his way up & he's defended his title a few times to boot.
Urango was gifted his title & he hasn't fought a live body other than Ben Rabah & we all saw that bullshit robbery.
It's nowhere near as bad. Cotto's fighting something other than a hype machine. ::**
Re: Cotto Vs Urkal ...for hatton's vacant WBA Welter belt
Since it will be Cotto's first fight at 147 they will find the easiest opponent they can get away with. They want Cotto with a belt as soon as possible. I like Cotto a lot but his handlers arent going to match him to tough.
Re: Cotto Vs Urkal ...for hatton's vacant WBA Welter belt
Well I guess they really want to ease him into the weight
Urkal's had a solid career but he's old, pretty slow, not a big welter, with very very little power. I can't see him outboxing Cotto by any means and it would be pretty shocking to see him hurt him.
Very easy title pickup, but I'm glad Cotto's moving up and hopefully his second fight at 147 will be an intriguing one.

I'm not going to argue that Urkal hasn't had the better career, of course he has, but at least Urango has a puncher's chance, I can't envision anyway that Urkal wins.

What title has Urkal defended? He's never been champion, before.

European EBU title babe.
Won it, defended it, if I am not mistaken...he still has it...either that or he vacated it for a defense against someone...I can't remember who.

Also...just checked boxrec to be sure...at Light Welter he was also a belt holder & he had & defended the WBC International Light Welterweight title on top of defending the European (EBU) Light Welterweight Title.
Currently...they show that he is titleless stateside in the U.S.

Take it from me, EBU titles mean NOTHING. They give them to whoever they like, and take them back just as quick in the form of dodgy matchmaking, rankings, jugding and refereeing, it may as well be one of those belts you get from toys r' us.
