As much as I dislike James Toney....
.....he won that fight clearly. He had to of outlanded Peter by a gross margin. And Peter's Rabbit punching was WAY WAY out of control. How convenient that Showtime doesn't show punchstat numbers.
Yes, Peter landed the heavier punches when he wasn't busy missing his target, but who in their right mind thought that he wouldn't be landing the heavier punches.
Also Sam Peter's rabbit punching was something that I was weary about in the Wlad fight.....while many of his supporters claimed it was Wlad's fault for turning his head, I had a small suspicion that perhaps it was a bad habbit on Peter's part....looks like I was right.
From this day forward I will never watch another fight without punchstat numbers again.
Trust me.....this isn't easy for me to concede to given that I can't stand James Toney, especially his fans (bunch of ghetto-rat pillow-biting pole-smokers), but he won that fight period.
I guess the powers that be feel that a heavy puncher will sell more tickets so Peter got the decision.
Re: As much as I dislike James Toney....
Sort of where I cam coming from...
Peter only landed heavier shots because:
HE IS HEAVIER
Plus he had a huge weight advantage... hard for Toney to turn him etc, which is why normally judges give points for scoring harder shots... because you have to set them up etc... it doesn't really apply... it wasn't through skill just size.
Re: As much as I dislike James Toney....
Toney got a chance versus Rahman. What did he do? Fought to a draw. Toney got a chance versus Peter but this time instead of being a draw (which would have been fair) they gave it to the other man.
Show up in top form and actually kick "arse" for a change.
I still have no problem with Peter winning. It is hard to justify the scoring. It was a close fight though. Peter had a point taken away, sure. However, if Toney wouldn't have been in arms reach of the ropes when he got rocked he would have went down and that point would have been meaningless. It didn't happen, but it did happen. If you follow me...
Re: As much as I dislike James Toney....
Actually I don;t think the loss will damage Toney's career. To me he seems more marketable now than he did just 24 hours ago.
He clearly won the fight, it was close but no way in hell that Peter, with a 1 point deduction won that fight, I just didn't see that at all.
I think Toney will get another title shot off the back of this defeat anway.
He's a bigger draw than Sam Peter and seeing as American's will be clamouring out for one of thier brave warriors to turn the tide against the Soviet Occupation I think Toney will still get the better offers.

I agree with everything you said except that. Toney would be a fool to retire that much is certain.

CC
I don't see how anyone could have given Peter more than 5 rounds and with the point deduction it seems that you would have judge fights only on agression to give Peter the decision. Or just really dislike him.

Yea no kidding, Im not a getto rat pillow, whatever the hell he said... I just love to watch Toney fight... Why do people have such a hard time understanding that this is boxing, and Im a fan of Toney's because I like the way he boxes.. I would prefer he just not say anything that way more people would recognize what a great fighter he is, but whatever he does choose to say or however he acts out of the ring he will always back it up and fight his heart out.
Re: As much as I dislike James Toney....
Yer but this has been said about Taylor v Wright, Hatton v Collazo, Barrera v Juarez
End of the day people see it different to others, just cuz you think the pther fighter won doesnt make it right...
Re: As much as I dislike James Toney....
"As much as I dislike James Toney....."
(That's it. I failed to think of anything I could add to that.)
Re: As much as I dislike James Toney....
Haven't seen the fight yet but from what I can tell many people believe Toney outlanded him by quite a bit.
My question is, was Toney landing his usual ineffective punches?

That kinda attitude is probably why you spend Saturday night's looking at this screen :)
It's a legit question, in the heavyweight division more than any other it matters how effective the punches are. So I say again, was Toney landing ineffective punches? Its the reason he didn't beat Rahman, and the reason most people don't want to see him at heavyweight.
Bitter anti-social asshole can't answer a simple question without being confrentational :lickish:
