Rippetoe's Strength for Boxers?

Does anyone do this program? Or does anyone do the Bill Starr or other 5x5 programs?

Rippetoe's is pretty much 2 sets of workouts: Workout A and Workout B.

Your week would start:
Monday - A
Wednesday - B
Friday - A

2nd week:
Monday - B
Wednesday A
Friday - B

pretty much resting on in between days.

The actual lifts are as follows: (taken from a write up on bb.com)

Note: This doesn’t include warm-up sets

**Means this is OPTIONAL**

Workout A
3x5 Squat
3x5 Bench Press
1x5 Deadlift
**2x8 Dips (if you cant do these or no assist machine then do Decline Dumbbell Bench Press with your hands Facing each other)

Workout B
3x5 Squat
3x5 Standing military press
3x5 Pendlay or Bent Rows (or power cleans)
**2x8 Chin-ups (recommended mainly if doing the cleans)

Each week you try to make it a goal to increase your lifts by 2.5% and all work sets are done with the same amount of weight (no pyramids)

-In the bodybuilding community, this program is praised left and right for being able to increase lean muscle mass and unreal gains in strength for the n00by lifter. I've been lifting throughout my college career on and off, so I consider myself a nooby lifter and am willing to unlearn all my 'knowledge' and start from scratch with this program.


-Has anyone in here had any luck with this program or other comparable compound lifting programs? I definitely like that the program emphasizes whole body movements and hits the core muscles on every workout.

-My only concerns are:
1. As a noobie boxer, it seems as if the ideal way for weight training is body weight resistance excercises, or training for endurance via high volume high rep low weight lifts. I'm sure everyone can appreciate a good core work out as well as good explosive power workouts (such as the power cleans), but the low volume high weight nature of Rippetoe's almost seems to go against everything that I have read about the nature of boxing workouts.

2. Part of what I like about this program is the low volume and convenience of it. I will be able to slot my pure boxing days (I've posted up my routine for critique) in betweeen lifting days, and will be able to get in my roadwork, cardio, and a bit of boxing training in on some lift days. I guess I'm just a bit scared of over-training.


-Regardless of these concerns I will be starting this workout regime next week, if anyone could provide any feedback or personal testimonials that would be great.
