Help on gloves....

Hey all, I'm in the midst of finding myself a good boxing gym, but for now, I'm working on my basics and techniques with available equipment from my school (UCLA) gym.

Equipment includes: heavy bag, medicine balls, ab benches, resistance bands, weights, water-filled standing heavy bags.

I'm 21 and starting my 4th year of college, I've never thought about boxing seriously; so my workouts are basically weight lifting centered supplemented with boxing for cardio.

It seems however my interest has been increasing exponentially for the past 2 months and has yet to plateau. Once I find a good gym I'll see where it takes me Smile.



-In any case, I've been using these ( http://www.boxingdepot.com/bx-bg-14.html ) everlast leather heavy bag gloves. they're getting a little old (from a couple of years muay thai use back in high school); so even with wraps my knuckles are still tearing up a little bit.

in case I would need gloves that I can hit the bag AND spar with.



-Shoudl I have gotten dedicated bag gloves?

-If anyone knows a good online source to get quality equipment @ good prices (I just ran out to my local sports authority); I'd really appreciate it.

Im not an expert but from what I have read here it is better to have seperate gloves for bag work and sparring. When you use gloves on the heavy bag the padding in the gloves can be flattened over time which would make the gloves dangerous for your sparring partner.

Good places to look would be www.ringside.com and www.titleboxing.com. Both are fairly inexpensive with a good selection of products.

yes, it is better to dedicate gloves for the bag and for sparring because of what Ty just said. Also, if you have nice gloves for sparring, like my Tuf-Wears http://store.titleboxing.com/title-t...ng-gloves.html , they'll last much longer if you use them ONLY for sparring. The bag will wear any glove down faster because you'll be hittng the hell out of them. Thus, I use $29 everlast 16oz training gloves (which could also be used for sparring--that's actually wha they're for) on the bag since they're cheapies and I don't care if they get beat to hell and need to be replaced.

One last thing..those gloves you're using on the bag, they're not really good for heavy bag work. There's no padding in them so you're gonna kill your wrists and knuckles. I don't even know why they make those things. people use them on speedbags but I prefer my free hands for speedbag work.

Dont think theyd even keep your hand warm.

I suggest getting a pair of bag gloves for the bag, not those mitts! but a pair of proper bag gloves. Then a pair of 16oz for sparring.

A lot of people on here recommend getting a pair of cheap 16oz also for the bag, but seeing as your not going competitively yet and working on your conditioning and basics then bag gloves will be fine.
Hell the best amatuers i know use bag gloves on the bag instead of sparring gloves, so youll be fine for now with a pair like this:
