How DO I DO uppercuts??

Hi, first post ever on this site. I have been boxing a bit over a year in the gym I go to(NOTE its not a boxing gym but a weightlifting gym). I dont really box per say(I am not really ever planning on stepping in the ring) I do some heavy bag workouts and some shadow boxing. I enjoy it. In fact I put a dent in the bag the other night, Foreman style(not quite as nice though)!! Talk about confidence booster. Anyway there is a problem. I have only a heavy bag in the gym as my resource. I cant really do uppercuts on the bag. Perhaps I am not looking outside the box but since the heavy bag has a flat face it is not really possible to do uppercuts on there. Someone please help me out here with this...I assume there is a way to do so...Maybe ???

get some string and attach it to the bottom. then tie the other end on something else so the bag is on a different angle so that you can do your uppercuts. :)

the way its set up its be pretty hard to do that....

You either need a bag with the right angles or some one to hold pads for you correctly (good luck finding one in a weight room... ;))

cheat if you have to. Throw an uppercut low (a body shot) that doesn't come "up". Sometimes that's all you can do without an uppercut (angle) bag.

You could get on your knees and hit the bottom of the bag .

You could just hoist the bag up.Or loop the bottom with rope up to the chains for a bit of an angle.You get to chase it around as well, like that.

just to say, if you are throwing the uppercut, my trainer said to me (i weight about 63-66), but hit hard for my weight, he said that when you throw the upper cut, use it as a shot to open the chin up for a hook. e.g. if you are orthodox chuck right uppercut, left hook/left uppercut right hook (whichever hook is more powerful) and vice verca for southpaw. That is if you ar egoing to fight, i know some weightlifting gyms fight like one round the corner from me called Cheetas. I dont know how heavy you are so youve got to decide whether it is a powershot for you. Basically try not to drop your arm when you throw the punch incase you are caught with a hook and generally be in close (when you have got them in the corner) throw short uppercuts and hooks, when at long range chuck a screwshot (basically a long uppercut that you dont lift up so far at the end, like an upside down jab).

Haha, heellllllll no! If you get on your knees and hit the bottom of the bag you are just asking to jam your wrist! I remember trying that a couple times back in the day and busting my wrist BAD! I had an 80lb bag at the time and because the bag gets so incredibly hard on the lower half and the short distance you have to throw the punch this can cause a lot of wrist/hand problems. Better to get one of those doughnut shaped things that fit over the heavy bag, they work very well and dont jam your wrist ;)
