Perceiving pain
Is there any way to turn your brain off to pain? ie, can you increase your tolerance to it? It's amazing that guys can get slugged in the face and keep coming. With 8oz gloves those shots would have to hurt the average person, but boxers seem to have the ability to turn pain off.
Can it be done? How do you ignore pain? Or how do you increase your threashold to it?

Re: Perceiving pain
I quote dalton from the film roadhouse
"Pain don't hurt"

Re: Perceiving pain
Or Bas Rutten: It's only pain.
To me it almost seems like boxers get knocket out because their brain gets rattled, but they're not actually in any pain. Know what I mean? It's like they feel nothing until that final blow that sends them nighty night.

Re: Perceiving pain
Ive never actually been "in pain" while in the ring. Maybe adrenaline, but the pain always comes about an hour later.
What keeps me off while in the ring is the fear of being knocked out, or winded. I get some shots and think "bugar me that hurt" but i wouldnt call it pain as such, more of a "that was damaging" sort of sign.
Hard to explain i know ???

Re: Perceiving pain
1. You get used to it
2. Adrenalin majorly numbs it
3. you should be dishing it out :P

Re: Perceiving pain
I've never boxed without headgear so my impressions are skewed, but the only shots I've ever thought hurt were square in the schnoz and rabbit punches...and even those weren't that bad. Guess it is an adrenaline thing.
