Bernard Hopkins speaks on Broken Promise to Dying Mother

In a recent interview, Dan Rafael of ESPN.com scores another scoop when he confronts Bernard Hopkins on his well-publicized promise to his dying mother, that he would retire from boxing before his 41st birthday? Hopkins had already broken the promise by fighting Antonio Tarver a few months after turning 41. Now Hopkins is itching to fight Heavyweight Champion, Oleg Maskaev. So how does Hopkins rationalize breaking his promise again to his mother?
Hopkins answered the question with a well thought out response, telling ESPN: "I will ask my mom and God for
forgiveness, but this is a situation where I am trying to be the savior of the heavyweight division. If I get condemned for that, I understand. I look at it like this -- sometimes in life, you got to play Robin Hood. He was a very unique character. Even though he was stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, he still was stealing. But the justification for me to break my promise is so I can bring some credibility and respect back to American heavyweights.
Hopkins added: "I know I made a strong personal promise to my mom. She's up there listening, and I am asking her and God for forgiveness. I feel like I got to do something wrong to do something right. I did make a promise, but if this fight can be made, I will be breaking the promise and I am preparing to deal with the hard questions and the articles that will be written on this topic. I won't hide from it. They are absolutely right."

Being a fan of Hopkins since the first time that I saw him fight waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day...I have heard him say & do some really REALLY ridiculous things...but this...THIS is just idiotic.

One thing i love about you wacko (in a non homo way ofc:P) is love um or hate um u always give your truth full opinion and make it as un-biasd as possible...

CC back, i said b4, beating maskaev is the easy option... yes brilliant in 10 yrs time or so people will talk about him going 20 defences, winning a LHW, then a HW.. but the HW will just be a paper belt imo if he wins it, and will show just how bad the devision REALLY is

I agree... how exactly is he going to bring crediblity to the division?
Another former Middle Weight gets another belt... he's not going to clean the division up is he?...

Agreed. And even if he were to beat Klitchko, having a 42-year old middleweight come in in one day and take over the division wouldn't "bring respect back to American heavyweights"--it would just further substantiate what a joke the heavyweight division is.

He sounds to me like he is making excuses to justify it to himself. Just admit he's broken a promise and get on with it....
He wants to be in the ring, so should admit he told a fib and do what he will do anyway...
I would rather he stayed retired, but thats BHop for you.... ;D
