WBC to allow open scoring
According to Fightnews.com, the WBC has allowed judge scoring to be revealed after the 4th and 8th rounds.
What do you guys think of this? Do you think this will help avoid controversial suprise decisions?
The article noted that it has been tried before in the eighties, but trainers used this knowledge to adjust their strategies midfight. Wouldn't it be easy to avoid this abuse and if not, is trainers doing this really such a bad thing?

I think it would be a positive thing....It would force fighters to fight the whole fight....and maybe stop all the bs hometown judging crap....

I think its an absolutely brilliant idea in theory, after all boxing is one of the only major sports where you have no idea how well you are doing during a fight.
In response to the concern about it affecting trainer tactics, well surely that has to be good right? I mean what use would an NFL or soccer coach be with 15 minutes to go if he didn't know if his side were winning or losing?
The only problem I see with this though is hometown judging might be even worse.
If after every round (or 4 rounds) the scores were made known to the crowd, imagine the boos and hostility that could be unleashed on judges that voted against the crowd favourite?
But I think it is an interesting idea and one worth being tested.
Re: WBC to allow open scoring
Excellent .. Now lets make "18 Foot Rings " mandatory ! If Valuev can fight in an 18 foot ring, anyone can...
>:mad I hate seeing a 25 foot ring.

Thats the first thing I thought mate.
Re: WBC to allow open scoring
isnt part of the excitment of a fight going into the final round when ur sitting next to one of your mates, one of you screaming saying one has won and the other saying his fighter has won. if the scores r shown in the 8th wiyth the fucking rounds onli limited to 12 people could easily predict, its terrible, and should never be implemented imo :(

I agree. I dont want to see the judges score cards until after the fight.
What bothers me the most, is that I am watching fights (cotto video I am working on) and I can't help it when I hear Teddy Atlas say "We don't know what the judges are looking for." (He also says things like "We don't know what a judge enjoys in a fight.")
Statements like those above are very troubling to me.
It's the samething over and over again. You put three people in a room, and a lot of times people are seeing a different fight.
Age of the judges? I have seen some old azz judges who can not even drive a motor vehicle anymore, let alone judge a fast paced fight.
In closing, after skimming thru the following articles below, judging rules, explinations are flawed and contradictory.
What I am going to do, is read these articles and then come up with some examples. I would like others to do the samething if they have time. Let's see on how much we can agree or disagree on regarding the rules and judging so we can compare notes.
A judge’s concentration

Re: WBC to allow open scoring
Not a good idea.
Judges would be influenced by the crowds reaction and under too much pressure.
And some fights would be better after the 8th round, but there'll be a hell of a lot more made worse. No need to take chances when you've got the fight in the bag.
Re: WBC to allow open scoring
I think it is a good idea.
Judges may already be influenced by the crowd, so this should not make much difference. If they are frightened of getting abuse, they should not be judges!
I don't consider it abuse if a trainer adjusts his strategy mid fight because of the scoring, they do that anyway depending on what their best guesstimate of the scoring is?

If judges are already influenced by crowds, exposing their scores during the fight will make it a million times worse....For one, a hostile crowd reaction, towards the judges, could affect their concentration for the rest of the fight, let alone it sways them to score/see the fight different...How about if one judge is seeing/scoring the fight totally different to the other two? Would knowledge of their scores influence his/hers for the rest of the fight?
I guess a positve would be trainers pulling more fighters out that haven't got a chance of turning it around.

I don't want boxing to be like every other sport. It's boxing and that's why I love it.
I don't like the idea one bit and I really hope it is not sanctioned by the State Athletic Commisions.
Why announce the scorecards during the fight? The judges' scores should be passed on to an independent adjudicator at the end of each round, but to announce it to the crowd and to the fighters will completely change the shape of the fight.
A fighter who is well ahead at the end of the eighth round will just back-off and cover up - much like in football (soccer) where a team will take the ball into the corner or pass it about at the back.
I want to see action until the final bell! I want to see two fighters who have no idea which way the decision is going to go.
And I want the excitement of the announcement. That's all part of watching a title fight - waiting as the announcer says ..."and the NEW!!!" or "...and STILL!!!"
There must be a better way to sort out the problem of judging.
Still, at least it's not going to affect the Mayweather v Baldomir fight (which I have a crazy feeling Baldmoir could steal)

They could go a step further and make it a bit more like the X Factor. They should work out what the average score is, and then execute the judge who is furthest away from that average. Or, the crowd could 'vote them off' to spend the night in a cell with Ike Ikeabuchi.
That way, we won't get such ridicilously off-kilter judging that reflect the fact one of the idiots was not even watching.
