MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
what would happen if these guys got it on again after there epic encounter would hearns be able to keep hagler on outside and use his great boxing skills not allowing hagler to brawl him on inside would hearns have learnt his lesson or would it of been quick ko for hagler your thoughts please
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
hagler ko 9
anyone who had an amazing chin and hit hard imo could beat hearns, thats very few people however
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
It would be a closer fight if Hearns boxed more but I think Hagler could beat him and take him out in the later rounds of a 12 rounder.
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
pretty much agree i think hearns would box more but i dont know if he could survive 12 rounds with bull like hagler
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
When Hearns unloaded he bent his front knee and sat on his shots. On the move he wasnt as effective so it would have finnished as the first one did I would expect
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
I have a different slant than most guys on this fight. Hearns could hurt Hagler as it showed when he fought him the first time in 1985, problem is that Tommy hurt his right hand early with Marvin rushing in and Tommy landed wildly and hit Hagler awkwardly. I think Hearns and Hagler would have started slower in a rematch fight and it would have given Hearns a chance to unload with more leverage, since Marvin wouldn't have been rushing in as much and Hearns would have had more room to land. Tommy also would have come in a more natural 160 as shown with Shuler. he built himself up. I think Tommy would have come in and started landing his right hand and swelling up Marvin's face and landing his left hook to the body, and maybe stopped Marvin on cuts in round 4 or so..At the end of round one Hagler's face was already swelling in the first fight and Hearns did rock him.. I do not think Tommy could have gone 12 rounds taking Marvin's punches since Marvin was such a good solid puncher, not a one punch hard puncher, but a solid hard puncher. I just think the strategy for Hearns in the second fight would have been to stop Marvin, not to win on points. He hit Marvin very clean and could hit him clean in the first fight. Why would he have boxed if he could land the right hand anytime he wanted.?? I just think the right hand would have found its mark the next fight and possibly done alot of damage and it might not have dropped Marvin, but it would have hurt him enough to let Tommy bust up Marvin and win on points. I think Emanual and Hearns would have tried to stop Marvin in the second fight not win on points. Maybe I am wrong. I hope someone someday asks Emanual about this. .
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
The fact is that neither Hearns nor Hagler had trouble hitting each other, but Hagler would have always been easy for Hearns to hit. It is just a matter of Hagler not being able to hit Hearns. Hagler would have had to work himself into that frenzy again and fight the same way as the first fight, and that would have been hard. I think Emanual and Hearns knew they could hit Marvin and busting him up and winning on cuts something like that was the way to beat Marvin. The one thing they learned in the first fight is, do not brawl with Marvin since Marvin is stronger and takes a better punch, and they learned Marvin's defense was not good enough to stop Hearns punches. If Marvin came out smoking like he did the first fight, I am not sure what Hearns could have done. But Marvin seemed to fight a fight he could only fight one time. That was a superhuman effort to come in and make that decision to brawl. That is why the fight was so special. both guys came in with a superhuman effort which they could never have duplicated. Sometimes one guy comes in with that effort, but when two guys come in with that mindframe,, then you get that first round. Rare.
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
Know where you are coming from but cant see it. The uncertanty of having it with a guy who sparked you the last time early. dont think Hearns had the mental strength and confidence to try it. Plus it wouldnt work, Hearns latteral movement wasnt the best alright going left but not against a right handed southpaw, and Hagler was good at walking fighters down, who had not got good latteral movement
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
Scrap I see your point. Hearns had decent lateral movement, but not as effective as say Leonard. Hearns has the lateral movement off his jab so really it was the jab which was doing damage while the guy was trying to corner Hearns. Hearns sort of had a pivoting lateral movement which was in and out and then hold. Ray Leonard had better side to side lateral then stop and land fast combinations. Hearns had a rare punching rhythm though. I remember an article in 1981 where someone said Hearns punches are ta ta ta,, and Rays are ta ta ta... Sort of like Tommy has points where he lands two punches and then loads up with the third and forth. He combines speed with power loading up. But the fact is that Hagler did knock out Tommy in the 3rd round ,but he landed alot of punches on Tommy and Tommy went down after taking alot, so Tommy knows he could take a few shots from Marvin. I think in the rematch Tommy could have used the fact that Marvin is not as pumped up as in the first fight and he could have landed his right hand and power punches basically his jab and left hook to the body and that sneaky left hook he slips in which he works on his pivoting. I just do not see Tommy winning a decision with Marvin so to win I think he would have to stop Marvin, and I know he could have stopped Marvin. My feeling is he did have the power to do it. But I think this power of Hearns and the height would have worked against a normal speed Hagler, not a Hagler who was all pumped up and fighting wild.
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
I think after the first fight Hagler would not need pumping up. He would start fast
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
you think so? Seems like Hagler was pumped up alot since Tommy was calling Hagler a midget and saying he was going to knock Marvin out easy. I thought that worked against Tommy to get Marvin mad, especially a guy in Marvin who was a natural middleweight with a great chin. After that fight, Marvin and Tommy tended to become friends which was surprising to me. Tommy and Marvin became friends and they hated each other before they fought, and Ray and Marvin stopped being friends and were friends before. I guess if Marvin beats a guy he can stay friends with him, but if he is beaten he cannot be friends with that person.
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
Thats why hes freindly when I meet up with him then.
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
He beat you in a fight is what you are saying?? I do know that he made friends with Sugar Ray Seales after he had I think 3 fights with him. Marvin is a great guy it seems . I think what hurt him about Ray Leonard was that Ray bsed him a little in that fight. Tommy Hearns did not try to fool Marvin. Hearns fought Marvin fair and square and I think Marvin respected that.
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
Never boxed him, met him numerous times, proper gent
Re: MARVIN HAGLER VS THOMAS HEARNS REMATCH WHAT IF ??
Hearns would of kept his distance and won by decision.
