De la Hoya-Mayweather set for May
The much-anticipated bout between Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather will happen next May, according to reports.
De la Hoya, 33, told ESPN.com that the bout on 5 May, 2007, was a "done deal".
Mayweather, who won the WBC welterweight title earlier this month, will step up to light middleweight for what he says will be his last fight.
It will be a lucrative final payday for the 29-year-old against De la Hoya, who has won 10 titles in six divisions but who has not fought since last May.
Terms were not revealed but both sides said that their fighters will make career-high purses, which means $25m+ (£13m+) for De la Hoya and in excess of $10m (£5.25m) for Mayweather.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told the website that the fight would take place in either Las Vegas or Los Angeles.
De la Hoya, who was an Olympic gold medallist in 1992, was last in the ring back in May when he claimed the WBC light middleweight crown from Ricardo Miyorga in a vintage display in Las Vegas.
Mayweather, who has won five titles in four divisions, outclassed Carlos Baldomir to win the WBC welterweight title on 4 November in the same city.
The American remains unbeaten in his 37 fights and said after beating Baldomir that his next bout would be his last.
De la Hoya is trained by Mayweather's estranged father but the Puerto Rican boxer said he would understand if his trainer felt too uncomfortable to be in his corner.
"I will sit down and talk about this," said De la Hoya. "I want us both to be comfortable with the situation.
"But I am prepared if he says no to me. I am prepared to move on and get somebody else."

Re: De la Hoya-Mayweather set for May
Unless Hatton dares to venture upto 147 again, id say definately out of the question.
Quite sad actually. :-\

yea was looking forward to hatton vs mayweather but oh well i think it will be like lewis vs bowe one of the best match ups never to happen
Re: De la Hoya-Mayweather set for May
Team Hatton are currently well in with Golden Boy promotions so it would'nt suprise me to see Hatton v Castillo on the undercard of this fight. Would make for a exciting night of boxing !
Personally i see Oscar winning this one with a huge left hook KO'ing Floyd in the 9th.
Can Oscar come back and retain the P4P belt he held 10 years ago?
This is a matchmakers dream, cannot wait, and got the time booked off work already, no way im missing this one. Always wanted to see Oscar live, and this is the one !! 8)
Re: De la Hoya-Mayweather set for May
So, it's on.
Floyd Mayweather Jr v Oscar de la Hoya.
Pretty Boy v Golden Boy.
The best v the best known.
It's probably the biggest non-heavyweight bout since Marvin Hagler stepped into a ring with a man called Sugar Ray and certainly the biggest since Oscar lost a majority decision to Felix Trinidad in 1999.
"Done deal, baby! Done deal," a euphoric De la Hoya told ESPN on Monday.
His excitement is shared by millions of fight fans around the world.
Now, I'm not convinced "Pretty v Golden" will be an even contest because I've been awestruck watching footage of Mayweather train recently and I can't agree with Ricky Hatton's assessment of the 29-year-old's latest bouts.
"They carried him to the ring dressed as Russell Crowe and he ended up fighting like Sheryl Crow," Hatton told BBC Sport.
But make no mistake, this is box office boxing at its best. The build-up will be long and most likely amusing.
Las Vegas will roll out enough red carpet to pave the road to Hollywood. And the stars will be out in force.
Throw in the curious fact that Floyd Mayweather Sr trains De la Hoya, and the promoters are on a sure-fire winner.
If pressed on the result, I'll play safe with a comfortable points win for "Pretty". But let's not completely rule out a "Golden" lining for 33-year-old Oscar. He'll be at his best weight (light middle) and Floyd will be moving up again.
In Vegas, as in Hollywood, fairytales do happen
Re: De la Hoya-Mayweather set for May
May 5th, Mayweather reaches superstar status with an easy win!
Re: De la Hoya-Mayweather set for May
This is the one i think everyones been waiting for aside from Hatton-Mayweather. The money has got to be on Mayweather but what a tale it would be if De la hoya could roll back the years and pull it out the bag one last time. It would be like a mini Ali- Foreman all over again (maybe not be we can dream). :)
Re: De la Hoya-Mayweather set for May
Full credit to Mayweather for taking the fight....
win or lose he deserves respect if this fight comes off. 8)
BUT YOU DO KNOW HES GONNA GET THE BIGGEST SHOCK AND BEATING OF HIS LIFE ;)
but saying that he could have took on Hatton, Cotto and the rest and retired a great but no.... hes going for the impossible and you got to admire what he is trying to achive. ;)
ODH VIA KO WIN FOR ME ;)
Re: De la Hoya-Mayweather set for May
agreed saddo just shame hatton vs mayweather plus antonio vs mayweather cotto vs mayweather will never happen because there will always be doubters which is a shame if he beats oscar and retires i still like him as a boxer and respect him just wish other fights could of happened sooner :(

nah mate beating DLH would be a far better achivement than beating anyone else... he wont win.
but if he did it wouldn't matter what anyone said he could retire and be happy with his legacy IMO
but again he wont win ;)
