MCCAIN BOXING BILL PASSES SENATE
Yesterday the United States Senate passed the Professional Boxing Amendments Act of 2005 sponsored by Senator John McCain (R-AZ). The bill, passed by unanimous consent, builds on prior Congressional efforts to shore up the integrity of professional boxing and improve health and safety protections for its athletes.
The bill would strengthen existing Federal boxing law by making uniform certain health and safety standards, establishing a centralized medical registry to protect boxers, and provide uniformity in ranking criteria and contractual guidelines for professional boxers. Most importantly, the bill would establish the United States Boxing Commission, which would be a regulatory entity charged with overseeing professional boxing and setting basic uniform standards for the sport.
"Professional boxing remains the only major sport in the United States that does not have a strong, centralized association, league, or other regulatory body to establish and enforce uniform rules and practices. The failure of the sport to self-regulate and of states to properly oversee professional boxing leads to only one reasonable conclusion: it is well past the time to create a United States Boxing Commission for the sake of protecting the integrity of the sport and the health and safety of its athletes."
The bill was co-sponsored by Senators Stevens and Dorgan. A companion bill in the House of Representatives, H.R. 468, was introduced in February by Representative Peter King and is co-sponsored by Representatives Chip Pickering, Bart Gordon, and Tom Osborne.

Senate Commerce Committee Approves Professional Boxing Amendments Act of 2005
Washington, DC – The Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation today approved S. 148, the Professional Boxing Amendments Act of 2005, by unanimous consent. The bill was introduced by Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and cosponsored by Commerce Chairman Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND). The bill is identical to a bill passed by the Senate during the 108th Congress.
The Professional Boxing Amendments Act would strengthen existing federal boxing laws by making uniform certain health and safety standards, establish a centralized medical registry to be used by local commissions to protect boxers, reduce arbitrary practices of sanctioning organizations, and provide uniformity in ranking criteria and contractual guidelines.
The bill also establishes the United States Boxing Commission (USBC), which would work in consultation with local boxing commissions to enforce federal boxing laws and promulgate minimum uniform standards for professional boxing. Additional information on S. 148 can be found in the press room section of Senator McCain’s website (

– release dated January 25, 2005).
There were no amendments offered.

I guess if you read the following, you can come up with your own conclusions as to why this sport needs a commision:

Re: *CC if You can Help ME" Info on Sen. John Mccain's National Boxing Commission?
Thanks. CC. I should not have procrastinated writin this damn speech, but thats how I roll. Anyhow, I have to "persuade" my audience, or classmates to be more accurate to agree with me and take notice of my position. I'm supposed to make my issue relate to them, make them care about it somehow. Only problem is none of em know anything about boxing or really care about the sport. Any idea how I can link this national commission stuff to their daily lives or what they pay attention to? I'm comparin it to NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and how all those sports have national leagues or commisions and retirement for their players and stuff and players can go on strike and shat. And how boxing is part of American History and without national commission could die out, and is losing respect amongst public. Any suggestions folks? Thanks.

Hmmm....
It relates to them in that every occupation should have security for it's participants and workers. Every hard working person deserves a safe and secure career.
Boxing is not exempt. A corrupt system breeds more corrupt systems. Boxers, gamblers, Promoters, Business Minded People are encouraged to become corrupt by the examples of other corrupt bodies.
A national commission is there to prevent such atrocities. And Especially a WORLD recognized and influential sport such as Boxing, should have a stable national commission and league.
Every person who works hard for their craft needs a safety net of protection from the greed that which tends to come from certain groups or individuals who sometimes unfairly take advantage of people such as ourselves.
