Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds: Cotto & Margarito's shots
Well...once again...the networks have done it again.
You guessed it...HBO & ShowTime have broken it off in the debdicated boxing fan's poop chute.
Yeppers. Once again much to the ole Wackster's dismay...theyv'e put on two championship style cards in one day.
Not to mention that...but they've got pretty much the equivalant of 4 of Wacko's favorites on in one night.
Aint that a bitch?!?!?
Anywho, enough of this p!ssin & moanin.
So my fellow pugilistic enthusiasts...Which card is best suited for the DRBR? Which fights does Wacko cover on this grand occassion?
In truth...I had plans to defy all drunken reason & try to cover all 4 of these matches at once...just as I did during the Hopkins Tarver match & the Cotto Malignaggi match last June...but in all truthitude...that was a total cluster fizuck...& I just don't believe that I did my guy Cotto justice by doing so.
My hopes are that the Cotto match will be the opening bout of the ShowTime card...then I can cover the Wright Quartey fight...but I don't believe that it'll work out that way...so...unfortunately...I'll be pulling an all nighter on ShowTime.
That being said...it's time for yet another installment of Wacko's Drunken Round by Round.
On December 2nd, ShowTime is offering two tantalizing matches the knockout hungry boxing
community.
First up will be Miguel Cotto (27 fights with 22 ko’s & 0 losses) against fellow undefeated, Puerto Rican, & powerful southpaw Carlos Quintana (23 fights with 18 ko's & 0 losses) at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
After making either five or six (forgive me...I'm a bit airy this weekend) defenses of his WBO 140 pound title, Cotto finally steps up in weight in an attempt to claim the 147 pound strap that was recently vacated by Ricky Hatton when he unsuccessfully made the jump up & down from 147 back to 140 earlier this year. Turn about is fair play though, as far as the titles & straps go...so it should be noted that Cotto has relinquished his title at 140lbs on the move up to Welterweight for the right to challenge Carlos Quintana. Let it be noted that on top of the bid for the belt...the pride of Puerto Rico is on the line.
Win, lose, or draw...PR wins the night.
The last time we saw Cotto he fought skill to skill, power to punch, & kept his title with a knockdown & then a blood 12 rounder over a slickster puncher in Paulie Malignaggie. The win was a unanimous decision, but as a fan of Cotto's...I can honestly say that I was more impressed with the fact that Malignaggi was able to walk away...albeit in need of plastic surgery from their June, New York battle.
Now...while that might sound bad coming from a Cotto fan...so be it.
Everyone is always ripping in to Cotto...but he keeps on winning & now he's finally doing what most critics cried about...he's fighting beyond his normal weight...granted...it's against someone that weighs roughly in the ball park this time. Most fans have said that Cotto's been fed a steady diet of vets, has beens, & no hopers. Honestly, anyone that knows boxing knows that this is purely wack-assed opinions. Compare Miquel's record of opposition to that of any other up & coming fighters at his age & stage of career. For such a young champion holding a twenty something record...it's a might bit impressive. A large percentage of Cotto's victims have been former world champions, such as Bailey, Maussa, Corley, & most recently Abdulaev & Pinto.
Enough about Cotto...let's talk about Quintana, also known as "El Indio". Quintana hit the pro circuit in 1997 and to his credit won all of his bouts. My issues is that of all the 23 professional fights he's won...only one name really regsiters: Joel Julio. Both fighters were considered up & coming prospects...but oddly enough...Julio was the favored fighter of the night. The fight went 12 rounds & again...to Quintana's credit...he won the fight to the tune of a unanimous decision.
Hence...the shot at Cotto (still considered by some a prospect) and the vacant WBA Welterweight Title. The only questions here in Wacko's eyes are:
#1: Can Quintana take advantage of Cotto on the move up from Light Welterweight? or
#2: Can Cotto handle the speed & skills of a legitamate 147lb fighter & bring his power up to 147lbs?
In the end...those are the same two questions basically with the same two answers...but which man is going to be the YES man?
We shall see...
Also...on the same card Antonio Margarito (33-4, 24 KO’s) battles Josh Clottey (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) for bragging rights to the WBO Welterweight Championship.
Maybe this is the set up for a Cotto Margarito mega-match...but here's the catch...Quintana can box & he didn't come here to be a stepping stone for Cotto's first bout legitamately at 147lbs. The same can, primarily, be said regarding Clottey. Clottey has a lot to gain in defeating Margarito...& he's a damned fine boxer as well...not one of my favorites...but a fine boxer just the same.this could be the night of upsets.
Looking into Antonio Margarito a bit deeper...there are a lot of questions here also.
Margarito is the current WBO world Welterweight champion. Margarito's record stands at 38 fights, 33 wins with 24 ko's, & 4 losses. The thing about Margarito that often comes up are the losses & the competition.
They were all early on in his career...the first came in his 6th contest...the next loss was 4 up & the next 2 up. Margarito ran undefeated in 20 or 21 fights. Margarito has never been knocked out & to my limited knowledge of the man...I don't think that he's been legitamately injured...excluding the loss to Santos. The fight was stopped due to a cut over Margarito's right eyebrow, he was behind on points when the fight was stopped by the accidental headbutt. For some reason...this loss has been the most damning of his career. Odd.
Anywho, quite often fight fans are skeptical of Margarito & most forget his devastating knockout wins over durable opponents such as Gomez, Lewis, Cintron, Diaz, & many others.
Personally...Margarito & his promoter's mouth & bravado have done him in for me...but he is indeed exciting in the ring...it's just that there isn't a notable victim's name on the list, IWO, other than Cintron & "Six Heads"...and honestly...those are as questionable as Margarito. Both names falter when pressed by upper level opposition, as I feel does Margarito.
Like Margarito, Clottey (31 fights, 29 wins with 18 ko's, & 1 loss) has never been knocked out. The only loss on Clottey's record is a disqualification against former Welterweight Champion Carlos Baldomir waaaaaaaaay back in 1999. A loss is loss...but officially...what sticks with me is that Clottey has never counted light bulbs & at the risk of overstating myself on two fighters that I have limited knowledge of...I truly believe that Toney might be underestimating Clottey's abilities & he might just be in for a bit of a surprise. He's not a knockout artist like Margarito, but he can box, he's fast, & he's accuarate. If he get's in there & boxes...on point...it could be Margarito getting frustrated & Clottey moving all night long.
Anywho...as usual...it's getting close to that time once again...& you know what that means?
Yep. It's time to sit back, toss the remote, break out the laptops, or just...casually turn your telee towards your compu-station...because my fellow boyo's...it's fight night!!!
So pop some tops or pour up your poison of choice & head for the couch...wer'e gonna be knee deep up in this shiz once again.
Cheers & koneecheewah bitches.
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds: Cotto & Margarito's shots
I voted Cotto & Clottey by decision.
How about you'sa's?
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds: Cotto & Margarito's shots
Cotto and Clottey by decision. I think Quintana is going to be slick enough not to get KO'd and Miguel will box will enough to earn a close decision. I prefer that Clottey KO Margarito so we can stop hearing how he is the "most feared boxer", but I think he will do enough to earn a comfortable decision. Dont know much about him but just a feeling.
cc as always wacko, love the DRbR's!!!!!!!!
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds: Cotto & Margarito's shots
wacko you've got quite a big round by round, you have 4 fights
You have

Lacy vs. Vitali
Cotto vs. Quintana
and Wright vs. Quartey
How are you gonna do them all?

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds: Cotto & Margarito's sho
Excellent analysis Wacko for the best DRBR of the year for me....my 2 fave fighters! I'm also glad to see you guys that have posted tuhs far acknowledging that Clottey is a very very good, skilled, hard nosed fighter!! I'm going for Cotto,UD and Margarito, either late tko or UD,either way,Margarito CANNOT lose this fight...
Quick Q,of he beats Clottey, will you be impressed seeing as a few of you have predicted he'll lose!
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds: Cotto & Margarito's shots
Cotto by KO and Margarito by decision. Cotto has something to prove at welterweight and down the stretch I think Quintanna will decide to punch with him and get caught. Joshua Clottey is a rock, physically, mentally, technically, any way you look at it. He is gonna give Tony a tough fight. But I feel Tony will outbox him and counter him, hurt him some, but not stop him. I'm very happy that the injury to Margarito's ankle or whatever did not keep him from fighting. This is going to be a great great fukin weekend for fight fans, I cannot wait! Cotto, Margarito, Lacy....and ...Wright's boring all defense ass! Should be fukin awesome! Lets go Cotto, Margarito, Lacy and Quartey!

You always pick against my guy outta spite & hope beyond hope that he get's beaten...well...guess what? Yeppers. You got it. Go fwockin Clottey. ;D
Anywho...makes no nevermind to me in all reality...but I just hope that Cotto can get past Quintana.

I will depend on how Margarito wins the fight. If he wins decisively then he gets his props, if it is a tough fight then I think Clottey will get more props for it because he is less known commodity. And you know if he loses then he goes down the drain, sad but true. If he thought he couldnt get fights before, if he loses he wont be getting any decent fights.
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds: Cotto & Margarito's shots
quintana cotto fight is huge...I think its the biggest fight this weekend...
both undefeated its gonna be a great fight...I like both fighters but quintana looks more solid I`m kinda leaning more towards him to win...he can box cotto just like the cuban who was suppose to be a huge puncher but quintana dominated him...but I don't know I don't think cotto can aford to lose...both has bright futures though...this fight is the only fight I'm not sure of who to pick but for the rest of the fights this weekend I have.
margarito by u.d.
lacy by k.o
winky by u.d.

CC for picking Quartey. Quartey and Winky's style is eerily similar, that's gonna be a great fight. I'm definitely going for Quartey. Lacy should win. I've got Bob Arum's worst nightmare happening in the Showtime card, Margarito will lose in a UD, and Cotto is gonna get KOed. Realistically, I just want Tony to lose but I don't really think he will, I actually believe Cotto will lose.
