Would Winky be where he is now if he fought orthdox instead of a southpaw?
Re: Would Winky be where he is now if he fought orthdox instead of a southpaw?
...Um thats like sayin would ali be as great as he was as a south paw...
Re: Would Winky be where he is now if he fought orthdox instead of a southpaw?
he would still be succesfull because of his defensive and couter punch style. but i don't think he would be where he is un in the P4P ratings or status wise if it wasn't for his stance. everyone knows that it is awkward to box against a leftie because they are backwards from what you are used to. being a southpaw generaly works in the southpaw's favour and they tend to have as much trouble coming up against another southpaw as orthodox fighters do, simply because it's not what they are used to despite how much training they can do to prepare for one
Re: Would Winky be where he is now if he fought orthdox instead of a southpaw?
Good question Silver ;)
Infact, i asked this question ages ago (it was actually only my second post ;D ).
I could never understand what makes a Lefty so avoidable.
Do leftys see something the orthodox fighters dont?
Maybe Leftys fight with the natural instinct to read and even overcome the other fighters lead hand...
What looks like a dis-jointed match up to a right-hander may be perfect for a left-hander..?
I dunno? I need help on this one too. ::**
Re: Would Winky be where he is now if he fought orthdox instead of a southpaw?
Its the fact that leftys are different, the majority of fighters are right handed. When you only fight right handers thats what you get use to. I just think there are too many factors involved to say whether or not someone would be a success with their opposite stance.
Re: Would Winky be where he is now if he fought orthdox instead of a southpaw?
The answer is no he wouldnt be as good, he would have to completly change his style. Hes a right handed southpaw who controls the other guys direction with his front foot and his parifarrel eye in front gives him a better sense of distance, plus being a southpaw with his approach hes hard to break down. The other way round he would be a lot less affective

No one knows for sure...but IWO...yep...he would.
You can't just pigeon hole right as being a tricky southpaw...Wright is just tricky all the way around.
Great jab & amazing defensive skills...yeah...I gotta lean towards him being pretty damned successful.
Re: Would Winky be where he is now if he fought orthdox instead of a southpaw?
Winkys gift is that he is a southpaw with a good defence. Im not saying that all southpaws have leaky defences but many do because the majority of the guys they fight dont know how to fight a southpaw. Because of that they more often get away with mistakes
Re: Would Winky be where he is now if he fought orthdox instead of a southpaw?
I think he would have been just as good, or almost as good if he had trained his whole life orthodox... he has the speed, timing, and everything else I think is necessary to succeed either way.
Re: Would Winky be where he is now if he fought orthdox instead of a southpaw?
No. Winky has the hardest jab in the game,
because he cheated and is really a right-handed southpaw. ;)

Re: Would Winky be where he is now if he fought orthdox instead of a southpaw?
Not really it must have been about years, but in the 80s tere coaches who work as squads sat down and decided to go big on the idea most off their top lads were changed to southpaws and vice versa to have a good lead hand for the amatuer system, and for a while it took off. Us in England heard about it so Im pretty certain the Americans did to the two that come to mind are Dela Hoya and Winky, but before that who made it big Hagler
Re: Would Winky be where he is now if he fought orthdox instead of a southpaw?
he would be where he was now but i dont think he would be as effective in the ring. it's good hes southpaw
Re: Would Winky be where he is now if he fought orthdox instead of a southpaw?
Although Winky is one off my top 4 because hes got where he is on his own ability without a big promotor changing his lead hand would diminish his ability it would change his advatage of distance, and people would get to him qiucker. with him not being able to move his front foot as fast as he does because his sense of feel would be lost
