Monzon v Hagler – What Happened/What are your thoughts?

Round 1 – Hagler starts of fast and really tries to unsettle Monzon, with hooks and body shots, Monzon wasn’t expecting this sort of pressure from the start and although not hurt, he can tell straight away he’s in for a VERY tough time – Hagler wins the round 10 – 9.

Round 2 – Hagler keeps the pressure on, and does more of the same as in the first round, but this time Monzon is trying to keep Hagler at bay with his long jab, - Hagler takes the second 10 – 9.

Round 3 – This time Hagler for some reason feels he can hurt Monzon with his clubbing right and he catches Monzon with a right to the head and really roughs him up on the ropes, Monzon’s corner is furious at Monzon, as they urge him to keep some distance between him and Hagler. Monzon starts to employ his jab alot more towards the end of the round and he even manages to put Hagler of balance on the odd occasion, but Hagler takes the third, 10 – 9.

Round 4 – After getting an absolute shouting from his corner, Monzon comes out a lot stronger, straight from the off, he keeps the long Jab in Hagler’s face, realising from the previous round, he manages to keep Hagler of balance on quiet a few occasions and even catches him with a sweet uppercut, but Hagler’s not hurt and tries to go to the Monzon body but with little success – Monzon wins it 10 – 9

Round 5 – Monzon carries on from where he left off in the 4th and this time he use’s the uppercut more, real craftsmanship from Monzon in this round, Hagler shows his switch for the first time in the fight, he changes between orthodox and southpaw in an attempt to offset Monzon, Both fighters are fighting at a distance now and it’s the jab that’s the tool of the day – Monzon takes this round as he connects with the cleaner punches - 10- 9.

Round 6 – We now have a real fight on our hands, after a slow start from Monzon and a fast start from Hagler, both fighter are content with going back to the drawing board to figure the other out, fairly static round, but Monzon applies a flurry of combinations and for the first time in the fight he ruffles Hagler with a jab and straight left and right, although Hagler’s not hurt he can see he must try something different – Monzon just sneaks it 10 – 9

Round 7 – Going into the seventh, the fights even on all three judges scorecards, Hagler starts to apply pressure, Monzon clearly wants to keep as much distance between him and Hagler by using the jab, it seems as though Monzon is content to let Hagler come onto him. Hagler really starts to rough up Monzon, and he starts to take this fight in to a phone booth, the ref has a quick word with Hagler, suggesting he be careful with his head as he seems to be happy tucking it under Monzon’s chin and work the body. Hagler a lot more active in this round and he takes it 10 – 9.

Round 8 - Monzon comes out straight to the centre of the ring and Hagler meets him there, Monzon is working his jab as Hagler tries to unload bombs on Monzon, Hagler has some success but Monzon is showing grit and determination and starts to trade with Hagler, Monzon is again using his Jab, straight right and uppercut, this one is really heating up now, Hagler tries to steadily move forward on Monzon and switches stances in the process, but Monzon has this look in his eyes and is picking Hagler with some good stiff Jabs and straight rights and lefts. A lot more assured in this round, Monzon takes it 10 – 9.

Round 9 – We could be seeing the turning point in this fight now, Monzon is showing a lot more determination and matching Hagler for aggression. Hagler though is showing huge amounts of courage and stamina, both fighters don’t seem to be tired, Hagler keeps on coming forward and is beginning to keep to a permanent southpaw stance in this round. Monzon is content on using his jab and the occasional straight right to keep Hagler of balance, great tactics by Monzon to counter the southpaw stance, Monzon takes full advantage of his reach advantage and even though this is a close round, the judges go with Monzon 10 – 9.

Round 10 – Hagler comes out orthodox and follows Monzon around the ring with the Jab working and constantly looking to hook to Monzon’s body and head, Monzon is happy to take a breather in this round. Hagler levels it up 10 – 9.

Round 11 - After taking a breather the round before, Monzon is now the aggressor, he’s letting Hagler know about his reach advantage, ripping body shots and stiff jabs, for the first time in the fight Monzon is pushing Hagler back with hooks, uppercuts and the very successful jab. Hagler appears to have some swelling under his left eye, but that’s not having any impact on Hagler as he still gives as good as he gets, Hagler proving beyond doubt that he’s one tough cookie. Again another close round, but Monzon seems to be taking the closer rounds based on the cleaner work and this one is to Monzon 10 – 9.

Round 12 – Both fighters slow to come out of there corners, a lot of clenching in this round, but Hagler has more success on the inside and uses the hooks and uppercuts to good effect, Hagler takes it 10 – 9.

Round 13 – Monzon who was less active in the thirteen is now showing Hagler a high guard, forcing Hagler to go to the body, it’s a ploy from Monzon to work Hagler up top, risky but effective, Monzon is now using and making his height and reach advantage tell, it seems as though Monzon had been pacing himself and has now upped the tempo, he’s seems to be catching Hagler quiet easily, straight right, short left, in with the Monzon uppercut and Hagler has to hold, great work from the Argentine, he shrugs Hagler off and goes to work again, for the first time in this encounter Hagler was a clear second best in that round, Monzon takes it easily 10 – 9.

Round 14 – Monzon can sense he has an edge and goes straight to work with his full array of combinations, but Hagler is having to dig really deep and does so by trying to draw Monzon into a phone booth fight, trying to work Monzon’s body, Monzon is happy to take Hagler to the ropes and work his body in return, Hagler has more success to Monzon’s body and Monzon has more success to Hagler’s head – a very close round even 10-10

Round 15 – The final round, many experts predicted it would go to the last round, both fighters touch gloves, out of respect, Monzon takes the centre of the ring and seems to be more fresher than Hagler, Hagler tries to work Monzon’s body and head but Monzon shows more strength and with his height and reach advantage he pounds Hagler back, but as you would expect Hagler just keeps on coming forward. He didn’t see it, but Monzon timed it to perfection, Hagler get’s caught big on the way in, Monzon’s been using his jab and uppercuts to good effect in this fight and he catches Hagler flush with a steady precise three punch combination ending with an uppercut, he manages to shake Hagler, Hagler has to hold on, Monzon sense’s a KO and continues to go to work on Hagler, trying to put distance between him and Hagler so he can use his reach and try to take Hagler out, but Hagler’s strong and hangs in there. Monzon ends the round strong and takes it 10 – 9.

A very tough and gruelling fight for both fighters, a very close fight but Monzon just edges it with the cleaner work which was due to his reach and also he finished stronger, he just seemed to have a little more left in the tank. Both fighters showed guts and determination as expected, but Monzon seemed to pace himself better and was able to apply the pressure more accurately.

Monzon wins on points!

Thanks for the CC's I'm glad some of you appreciate my efforts, can you believe it 61 visits and only 5 posts and 2 of those are mine, but anyway I'm not upset :'(

I think neither the early 80's Leonard or Hearns would have stopped Hagler, I mean they both fought him and I think the outcome's would have been the same. Allthough I'm going to dig out the Hagler v Leonard fight and watch it agian and feature it on my Re-visited section in the future I mean there's still alot of controversy surrounding that fight. I think Roy Jones Jnr is an interesting one becuase he had the skill speed and decent power, but the question is he's never IMO fought anybody near the calibre of Hagler, so would Roy beable to live with "ruff house" tactics? considering that Roy was very good at avoiding shots becuase of his movement and skill, one would think this would go to points but also consider that when Roy's chin has been exposed recently, he’s been knocked out, yes I know age is a factor etc.

But I would say Hagler beats him on points, I think Roy wouldn’t get caught because he would have his movement (one of the reasons Roy has been KO’ed recently is because of his slowing reflexes and movement, his chin was never tested because he wouldn’t allow it to be tested, hence he had the reflexes and movement). I’ll go for Hagler to win a UD over 15 rounds and a close decision over 12 rounds.
